Default How to began the planning stages of this.

I have thought about eventually adopting but Im not sure. I have read all these horror stories that scare the dickens out of me. First Im single, thats a strike against me. I have no plans to marry, mostly because my job (second strike) isnt appealing to most men. Im a fire fighter and though the law says they cant discriminate aginst me for that occupation, many agencies, I have heard, have rejected TWO parent families because one is a firefighter. Its not as dangerous of an occupation as one might think, more roofers and electritians die each year because of accidents than firefighters or police officers. I am also overweight, though no other health issues (pcos but its not that bad) that would threaten life or limb. I would like to begin to look into this, as I am not planing to adopt anytime in the next, say two years, but I am begining to look into the planning process and see what I will need to do to qualify and so forth. At this point, what do I need to be looking at and into. What types of roadblocks can I expect? Where can I research my options before I approch an agency? Like I said, Im not running off tommrow and looking at adopting a child, but I want to have all the facts in hand before I even began to make plans. I want to know where I stand, and where to look for the information that I need to began the planning process.
any suggestions as to where to research?

Hello,

I would start by checking out the agencies around you. Even though you aren't quite ready to start the process, the agencies near you might be a valuable source of information.

Do you want domestic or international? Infant or toddler/older? Special needs or no? These are some of the things you might want to start considering now. Would you be willing to foster/adopt?

I don't know of a specific website you could check out....I'm sure someone here would be able to point you in the right direction on that.

Good luck to you.

PS...Cool job. My dad's a firefighter too (he's the fire chief at Kennedy Space Center). I have a soft spot in my heart for fire fighters.

wow, at kennedy? he has an very special job!!! I have worked an ARFF department before, and the stuff we had to know just on commercial and GA stuff was unreal! Because that airport was one of the emeg. landing spots for the shuttle, we also had to know a little about it as well. I know your dad has a major job b/c he'd have to know far more than we ever have!!! Thanks for the info too! :-)

Spookycyster had some great ideas for you to start at...even checking the library for books on adopting to familiarize yourself with the general idea of adopting and what it means to you and the child.

Anyhow a big Welcome to you and be safe
