Default How big of a deal is this?

I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor just told me one day and that was that. She did explain, but at first it seemed like nothing to me, just missed periods. Now I think more and more is hitting me about this. Am I over reacting, under reacting... I am not sure how to feel about this whole situation! HELP!

I think having PCOS is a major thing, however its not life threatening. Did you Dr talk to you about putting on BCP's to make sure you have a cycle each month? If not, you need to talk to your Dr about getting on BCP's (birth control pills) so that you do have a period each month. ( you should be having at least 3 periods a year) People with PCOS also need to be eating a more balanced diet, less carbs. Look into websites about PCOS. us ladies with PCOS need the periods b/c we have a higher chance of unterine/cervical cancer.

Yes, this is something you will have to deal with the rest of your life. It does make me disappointed, but most everyone I know has some sort of health problem and this is just ours. NOt only is it hard to conceive, but we are at a greater risk for diabetes, heart disease, arteriosclerosis (sp?), thinning hair - and the list goes on a little longer I think. We also have a bit of a higher risk for ovarian and breast cancer (I am pretty sure - you need to double check that). So yes, you will have to be more diligent in your health care and stay on top of things. Make sure you stay up on research and live a healthy lifestyle - and keep your check ups when you are supposed to.

In addition to the PCOS making me run a higher risk for heart problems, we have major heart problems from my dad's side as well. I know now that I will need to excersize the rest of my life to stay ahead of heart problems and watch what I eat.

I just think that I will just have to stay on top of my health but I'm not going to let it make me depressed. Don;t let it get you down, but you do need to pay attention to it.

PCOS isnt serious as in deadly (If you don't count the heart disease part) but it does take over your life. You have to take medications, you have to eat right (loooow caaarb), you have to tweeze/wax (ewww facial hair) and cover (acne, thinning hair etc) and struggle (trying to have a baby, trying to loose weight and be healthy) At first it might seem hard but it's not! Once you get used to the routine it's not so bad, really.

it is really amazing how PCOS effects almost every part of your body... screws up all you hormones.... you are young so you can get a head start on this,,, i am 27 and just finding out why all these thing have happened to me.... first get on birth control pill (if not already),, this will help you cycle every month,, also keep those male hormones down... and acne.... and.. and .. and.... i am lucky that i don't have alot of symptoms.... but i do have some of the worst ones... i steady gained weight i went from highschool 125lbs to 220lbs within a few years,, eating less and healthier,,, the weight just comes on... and facial hair,, i have to pluck/shave/bleach eveyday!!!! i have just found out that my insulin is high.... my hair had thined,, not noticable to others but my ponytail is 1/2 the size.... anyway my advise to you is learn as much as you can and learn to control this as you will live with it forever.

As the other girls have said, yeah....it is a big deal. Sadly, I think so many doctor's brush it off as not being one due to lack of knowledge on the disorder. Everyone else has given you great advice, but most importantly just remember that you CAN live with this. As soon as I was able to accept PCOS as a part of me, things started to look up. We do have to work at certain things harder, but it also makes us appreciate things more.

Good luck!!

you are lucky that you are not over weight.... but also lucky that you found out this soon,, i have has symptoms since about 14yrs old and was just finally diagnosed about a year ago... i am 27.....i was thin until i was about 20yrs and the weight just pilled on,,, i think because i switched birth control pills,,,, it is very common for PCOS (ers) to be over weight. low carb/no sugar is the best diet for us,,, get on birth control, if you can, it helps with the symptoms

Mya, i have to say that not everyone can handle bcps. I my self having been one of those people and i've been on 3 differnt bcps by 3 differnt manifactuers, i get sever depression and mood swings, which i don't have when i'm not on the bcps to the extent i get them when on it. I have my blue days but on bcps i get worse to the point of suicide at one point............if it works for ya great love, i'm glad someone can take them......but some of us can't. On thing i've found is that if you suffer with mood swings and blue days before the pill, it tends to magnifiy both in women with pcos.

I already have major mood swings, so will Birth Control make it worse? I have to have a few more "doctors" appts. before they will let me go on it. I just got my ultrasound results and the doctor said that mine is pretty severe....and thats why i have such bad pain, so are there any other options besides birth control?
