A quick clicking mod can do it. The trick is to double click the title so that it becomes highlighted in an editing box and then quickly clicking "stop" so that it doesn't take you to the actual thread. Then the title can be edited, but only by a mod in the forum the thread is in.
If there's an easier way, I'd love to hear it.

I think if you just click on 'edit' (once you're made the post) as though you were going to edit the message part, you can edit the title at the same time.

Unless I'm mistaken and something has changed, the title doesn't change on the main page of the forum, though. Just once inside the thread.
