Default how to choose an adaptogen?

I really think I might benefit from an adaptogen. The thing is- how to choose? I mean I could go to a herbalist, but then which tradition should I choose? Western, Chinese, or Ayurvedic? Surely I would then be restricted to whatever adaptogens are used by that tradition? And suppose that might not be the best one for me? I like the sound of rhodiola rosea, ashwagandha, or siberian ginseng. Don't think Panax ginseng is for me. I think I read that ashwagandha (sp?) is anti-estrogenic. Now is this good or bad for me? I don't think I have too much estrogen, but I guess I am estrogen dominant. Then I read that siberian ginseng binds to the oestrogen receptor and to the progestin receptor. Again, is this good or bad, or OK? Will this increase the effects of oestrogen and progesterone in the body? Basically I am looking for cortisol control.

Hi there Matilda...I haven't read anything about Ashwagandha being anti-estrogenic or about the Siberian Ginseng binding to estrogen and progesterone receptors...although everything is possible but I wouldn't worry about those two herbs. Adaptogens you should avoid are Asian Ginseng, American Ginseng ( both of them are called Panax Ginseng)...they have strong estrogenic properties...also new data suggests that Rhodiola Rosea also has strong estrogenic properties so avoid it as well. Schizandra, Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha and also Jiaogulan are great for women. To know which one will work the best for you is impossible to say...you're going to have to try them out...they all have different qualities but they are all good.
