Default How to determine if you need Met or not?

I was recently diagnosed and have not had my insulin resistence checked -- my TSH was 1.79 and I was told "normal" -- how can I determine if met is an answer for me? What tests shall I do?

thanks everyone

Hi there,
As far as I know high/low TSH is not the criteria for prescribing metformin...your doc will do fasting insulin fasting, glucose and GTT and the same for insulin too.... to see the values and decide if u need met or not....I was borderline IR with fasting insulin of 13 and fasting glucose of 98 ( i didn't have the GTT done)...after taking met for 3 months my fasting Insulin came down to 6 and fasting glucose to 78 and i have great energy levels and with a combo of diet, exercise and 1500mg met I've lost some 13lbs in 3 months.....I'd insist on getting the IR tests done...met helps a lot if u r IR....

HTH

If you read the FAQ thread, there is a study on how a lot of ladies with success on met had certain symptoms: 1) high male hormones (testosterone, Androgen, or hormones that convert easily to male hormone...DHEA's etc.) and 2) absent periods. Most Dr's that have read up on met try a trial of it based on whether or not you have these symptoms and not on your bloodwork alone. If you fit that criteria, i would head to the FAQ thread at the top of the metformin forum and print it off so you can talk to your Dr.

Hope it helps.
