I have had PCOS for 8 years, been on met on and off for 5. I have suffered with hypo's on and off, and was told by my Dr to just carry a chocolate bar around with me. When I saw my Dr recently I asked whether it was possible I was diabetic as I thought I was having hypo's and he said he would test me in 2 or 3 years time, but the met would mask it.
Recently I had a stay in hospital and not really understanding why I was on met they regularly did my blood sugar which ranged from 7 to 3.7 but they never commented on these figures.
How did you know you were diabetic? Should I ask to be tested or as I am on met will it make no difference?
Ali,
Stop, Listen, CHANGE DOCTORS Asap! I was diagnosed with PCOS 7 years ago even though I had it all my life. I wasn't diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes until 2 years ago. Met does help regulate your insulin etc, however, your doctor should be testing you every year. Symptoms can vary with everyone ...Me personally I did not know I had type 2 until I got tested. Then the doc asked me was I light headed, lots of headaches, dizzy, thirsty, frequent urination, etc....Of course, I just assumed this was all PCOS related. Never once did diabetes enter my thoughts...So, please demand to get tested & they should prick your finger in the office to check your sugar levels & do some blood work as well to check your A1C which measures your average sugar level over a 3 month period. You can't wait 2 to 3 years....Come on

(850mg twice a day - met)
They probably didn't say anthing about your sugar readings as they are normal values for a non-diabetic, and are the levels a diabetic should try to keep their sugar levels between.
Regarding the hypo's, met doesn't actually cause hypo's as it doesn't cause any added insulin to be produced, it makes your insulin receptors more sensitive to the insulin you already produce. If you are starting your day out with a lower level reading make sure you eat otherwise you will feel low. My friends who are not diabetic and are at the lower end of the range will feel exactly the same, light headed/dizzy etc.. as their body needs fuel... Often on night duty (way before I was diabetic) we would check our sugar levels and they would be anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5. Those levels you have been getting are fine, just make sure you eat and go no more than 4 -5 hrs without eating something.
There are many signs and symptoms you can have that will give a diagnosis of diabetes, everyone is different. I was diagnosed when I was admitted to hospital with chest pains.
Some pharmacies do free blood glucose tests these days, I know LLoyds Chemist does, go in and get one done, tell them your history and see what they say.

The symptoms are sleeping a lot, increased thirst, using the bathroom a lot...those were my main symptoms...I slept night AND day..only got up to drink fluids and go to the bathroom. I know that those symptoms are the same for both types of diabetes.

My main symptom was thirst. I don't know how I was able to drink so much water. No matter how much I drank it was never enough.
