Default How do I get rid of chin hair without it coming back darker or thicker?

I have long hairs growing where my neck and the bottom of my jaw meet. They are blonde and thin now, how should I get rid of them without making them grow back darker and thicker? Should I wax or pluck them? I am ttc and may be starting metformin next cycle, but I have heard the side effects are terrible. Should I just wait and let them keep growing as they are until after I get pregnant and then go on birth control? Does birth control help with extra hair? Thank you in advance. Janee

Honestly, I would just leave them! I'd give anything for my chin/facial hair to be blonde and thin... lol.
Yes, birth control is supposed to help with excess hair- certain types of the pill, at least. Yasmin and Diane-35 seem to be the ones commonly prescribed for this.

My excess hair was far worse before I got on Yasmin. Now I hardly have any.

I may be wrong, but I don't think plucking, waxing or shaving makes hair grow back thicker or darker. Dark coarse hairs are terminal hairs, like on your scalp or legs. They become terminal hairs from hormones, not any type of removal. Over the past 20 years I have had my neck hair near my jaw revoved by waxing and I have plucked it too. They are still light and fine. I am 42 so every once in a while I find a terminal hair in the mix, but that is normal at my age.

The reason the birth control pills work to combat the excess hair is because it is suppressing the androgens (male hormones) that change the fine hairs to terminal hairs. When a woman with PCOS goes off the pill the excess hair will come back.

There are great articles on this site that I have read to get this information.

I read the same articles on the site you did, it seems. You are quite right. The type of hair removal does not dictate the color or coarsness of the hair.

I asked my doctor this same question! She said that generally waxing helps remove the hair without it coming back in thicker, she said it may actually slow the growth. However, I have been waxing for a while and now I have ingrown hairs that are such a pain in the behind. Some gals use hair removal creams, I'm not sure if it grows back in thicker, but it may be an interesting alternative....

As for these BCP methods, I'm going to call my doctor soon. I wasn't aware that BCP can help with the hair growth. Definetly interesting!

Your doctor is right but ONLY when the hair growth is not hormonally-driven and with PCOS it's almost always hormonally-driven.

Hair removal creams do NOT cause it to grow back thicker -- but may damage the skin and if the growth is hormonally-driven, the hair removal creams safe enough for facial use may not destroy the coarser chin hair.

BCP can certainly have an effect, becuase the reason we grow coarse hair on our chins is that we have male hormones in sufficient quantity to cause male pattern beard growth. Estrogen counteracts the effects of the male hormone testosterone and most BCPs contain estrogen, so as long as you keep taking an appropriate BCP, the beard growth may be slowed down. However, there's a downside --- when your body detects the extra supply of estrogen from the BCP it will cut back or shut down the body's own natural production of estrogen and when you stop taking the pill the body may take a long time to restart producing estrogen or may not restart at all, leading to even greater testosterone-domination of your hormone balance and consequent heavier beard growth.

Life's not simple. :-(

It's just a myth that shaving makes hairs grow in darker and thicker. You're actually changing the shape of the hair since you're cutting it where it meets the skin, so it appears darker but really isn't. Once it grows out entirely and isn't stubbly, it will be softer and lighter again. I used to shave my neck and chin every other day, but now I prefer plucking, since it lasts longer.

Have you tried exfoliating? It helps me with ingrown hairs (I am a shaver, though).

I do a combination of plucking (for those lovely dark hairs) and use Surgicreme facial hair depillatory (which gets those long golden blondish ones that make me look exceedingly fuzzy).

I keep hoping if I pluck them consistently, they will eventually just not come back...keep getting that root pulp out...

SIGH

I am not sure if its the same thing that you are talking bout but I get random long blonde hairs all over the place. I have one on my back and between my boobs and on my stomach and on my cheek. I always just pluck em or pull them out if they are long enough cuz they are blonde until they are long I dont really notice them. But I have had them for years and in all the plucking and pulling they have never changed color or texture.
I do also have a few stray dark hairs on my chin but I dont think that is pcos related for me cuz every woman on my moms side of the family had it and as far as I know only my mom and me are the only ones that have any kinda 'female' problems and hers were not really hormone related since she had a huge fibroid and a histerectomy at 34.
But I dont think that plucking the long stray blonde hairs will change them at all.

Well, mine are not just "stray"...it's all in the beard area. I've always been rather "fuzzy" in that area, with the stray black/red/auburn ones (I'm a red/auburn/brunette--depends on the season! LOL).

I had a long hair on my chest years ago and ripped it out...and it hasn't ever come back.

I've had more of a battle with acne, than with the hair, though. I don't know if that is a blessing or not...

It may sound strange but you should try the bare minerals make up. Since I started using it and the reverupper from the same line I have had little to no issues with acne. My acne used to be absolutly horrible and I have the scars to prove it LOL. But not only does the makeup seem to help with the condition of my skin it covers really well with out that cakey look that getting good coverage from other makeup can give you. You can order a starter kit at bareminerals.com I think is the web site its either that or bareessentials.com. HTH

Default Chin hairs..

Igia (dont know if its spelled correctly) a company that manufactors beauty gadget and gizmos came out with a tweezer set that sent a small electrical charge (to small to cause any tissue or health damages) and it causes the hair to come out by the roots and each time you remove the hair in this fashion it sends that small charge to the follicle and stunts it so that the hair grows back finer and finer till it stops growing at all. I have one that I use on some pesky hairs around my nipples so I know its not dangerous and after about 2-3 times I never have seen the hair again. Its painless and very handy for mine runs on a battery. Ive seen some that are plug in versions. Now I pull mine out when I find hairs that I dont want to deal with or be seen by others.

its kinda expensive but I always had good luck with electrolis (sp?) and once you get it under control you only have to go every couple of months it also helps prevent ingrown hairs and if you go in the begining of your cycle and have someone who knows what their doing its pain free
