I've been taking 1500mg of met since Dec 2006. I'm a thin cyster and aside from not getting periods, I don't have other pcos symptoms. I'm also not insulin resistant nor have diabetes.
I was wondering...how is metformin supposed to make you feel? Like what does it make you feel like as opposed to before you were taking it (and I'm not talking about losing weight or that sort of thing with it). As far as I can tell, it isn't making me feel better (I wasn't feeling bad to start with though, it hasn't brought on my period, and if anything it makes me feel worse).
Have you talked to your Dr to let him/her know that it hasn't changed anything? I think at the very least it should have brought AF back. Have you tried BCP's with the metformin? You may need another med like provera to bring AF back...

I was on Met and BCPs from Dec until March (when I'm on bcp I'm totally fine with AF). Then beginning of March went off BCP and took Clomid and Met...didn't work (not pg)...didn't get period either. Just finished taking Provera and waiting for AF.
I guess my main question is...what is the Met trying to change? Is it just supposed to give me my periods back? I know there are blood levels and hormone stuff involved, but I guess I'm just wondering if it is supposed to physically make me feel different.
Metformin I guess technically is suppose to help your body get back to normal levels, it also helps with PCOS symptoms (weight, hair growth on face, acne, mood, insulin, etc) but also for a lot of people it straightens out their cycles (for some it helps them O, if they already O'd before it helps you O regularly) like my cycles were always different lengths because I would never O on the same day, metformin helped me O on CD18 pretty regularly and this month I actually O'd on CD15.
Some people have to up the dose and some people it doesn't work at all (alone) Did your Dr put you on it just to try and get AF back?

You know, I'm not 100% sure why he put me on it. He said that there had been research that stated Met could help regulate non-diabetic women with PCOS , so I guess that was his plan--to get me to ovulate/get periods. Like I said, I don't really have any of the other symptoms of PCOS (although I haven't had an ultrasound, so I don't know if I actually have cysts on my ovaries), so I'm just assuming that's what the Met is being prescribed for. And since we're TTC now, he said there has been evidence that Met helps with decreasing the risk of miscarriage in PCOS patients.
If the Clomid doesn't work this time around, I'm definitely going to go back in and chat with my Dr. about everything and see what he has to say. When I went in last month he asked me how I was doing on the Met and I said fine, thinking he was asking if the GI issues had gone away, which they had, but maybe he was asking if I felt different in general with the Met. I don't know--this is all so much new stuff!
Im on 3000mg and Ive seen changes.
Ive lost 26.6lbs so far and my body hair has improved amazingly.
I am thrilled with 99% of its effects (obviously the very healthy diet helps too).
The only thing that annoys me is that I havent gotten af since February.
I get totally hormonal and get period pains big time, but no af.
Im not back at gynae until September but if af doesnt show up soon then Im going to email her and ask if I can have provera or something - there is no relief from the hormones without af.
My gynae has nothing to do with my Metformin though, Im on it because Im diabetic but Im sure she'll help me out with af if I ask her nicely.

Yes Met does help decrease the m/c rate so if you're ttc I would definitely recommend staying on it.
I think maybe you should get an U/S just to see what's going on inside.
What dose of clomid are you on? I wouldn't recommend this anytime soon, but some women have ovarian drilling when they're still not O'ing with meds. But I would ask your Dr to increase your meds if this month doesn't work.
Good Luck!!

I don't feel any different on met (except for the Upset stomach stuff and some weightloss) either, but you can see by my sig that it has helped me. I don't have many other signs (mild acne) so maybe it might depend on your severity fo PCOS to if it would make you feel any different? I did ovulate before I was on it, but it made me more regular and more frequent. Ultrasound might show if its helping to decrease your cysts. I'm thin and have never been tested for IR.
I'm a thin cyster and also have not had AF since I went off BCPs about 6 months ago. I was then diagnosed with PCOS after blood tests and ultrasound. I started Metformin yesterday (1000mg/day) and so far I only feel a bit buzzed for an hour after taking it. I have also been wondering how effective Metformin is for thin cysters. Hoping to get AF back! I'll keep you posted.

ditto here too....... im on Met to bring back py periods after being diagnosed with pcos, another thin cyster here Nothing has hapened as yet, but im very impatient.... I dont have diabetes or anything either, just acne, i hate it
Just thought I'd give you an update. AF started today -- I haven't had one in 4 months!! However, this is only my 11th day on Metformin. So I'm a little skeptical that met was the cause. I read that it's pretty consistant that AF arrives 14 days after you have ovulated. I was on the low GI diet (and zinc and womens vitamin supplements) for about a month before I started met. So now I'm not sure which one helped bring on AF. Any ideas?
Kris

Hi all! I am new here, too. You have given me some encouragement, TrishainAZ, with Metformin working so well for you. Until I found this site, I never really considered that being thin with PCOS might mean that other thin cysters and I might have even more in common with this disease! My doc put me on 2000mg a day, and I have just last week gradually worked up to that dose. I am hoping it will restore AF, and had wicked bad cramps last night, but only spotting today (sorry, TMI!). How long has it taken ppl on Met to get back into the swing of things, so to speak, when it has worked for them?
I'm not exactly sure how you define "working" for you, but it took me 3-4 months each time I was on it to get pregnant (whatever month i start taking met is the month I give birth the following year) Good luck!
That's how my first period started....huge cramps and spotting one day....and then the next day AF came on full force. So hopefully you'll get AF today! I was on 1000mg of Met for 11 days before I got AF, but I also ate a strict low GI diet, and took 60mg of zinc supplements daily (which are supposed to restore the reproductive system). Hopefully my next period will be on schedule.
Good luck!!
