Default How does the doc figure out what to prescribe?

I was just thinking, it seems like a lot of doctors automatically put people on met or different BCP, etc. But the doctor just put me on Aldactone. She hasn't even offered to test me for IR (I see her tomorrow to bring it up)... she just basically said losing weight would help and tried to give me an Rx for Meridia but my BMI wasn't high enough for insurance cover (and I wasn't going to pay $125 for it).

I just don't see how she wouldn't suspect IR in me since I'm obese and I have a lot of central weight in my stomach. Is Aldactone mainly to lower hirurtism? I'm just all over the place and I know a lot of my questions will be answered tomorrow. And I think I'll have her refer me to an endocrinologist.

Thanks for your input, my brain is scattered!

Ask your Dr. when giving you an RX... ask why... some Dr.s are more likely to give out scripts, more than others.. Their way of practicing I guess.. Others... require tons of tests before they do anything.. If there is something that you'd want to try... tell your Dr... and give a good reason why.. that way, they're more likely to give you a script.

Thank you, I'm just all over the place on this med stuff. It seems to me that some doctors test for IR when they do the hormones if a pt is having weight problems. What I can't figure out is why my doctor didn't think to test me for IR since it is so prevalent with PCOS patients and that I am obese. Maybe thats why I need to see an endocrinologist. I'm going to get a referral tomorrow.

Thank you for your response!

I just wanted to say, you have to be on bcp or IUD or abstinent with spiro/Aldactone. It can cause birth defects, and for most women it messes up AF bigtime crazy anyway if you're not on bcp. Did the doc even listen to you?

I did happen to lose a bunch of weight on spiro, but I was NOT ovulating (had IUD, no bcp). I bled all the time. I had never heard of anyone losing that kind of weight on spiro--most people lose 5-10 pounds, I lost almost 40 (1/3 weight).

Docs usually suggest met, especially if you're ttc. It didn't work for me, but many people have had good success with it. But you can't ttc with spiro.

I can't figure out why they put you on Aldactone--did you have hair issues of some sort (gain or loss)?

My doctor did mention that I should not be TTC and using BC on Aldactone. I'm not TTC but am not on any BC. We don't use the safest method. I'm about to be refered to a endo, and I'll be sure to get more direct answers and a BCP Rx! Thank you for your advice!

guineapig- you said that when doc put you on spiro, you bled a lot but it was not AF... Just before she put me on spiro (have horrible hair growth and loss, acne, sweating, etc) i got my period on my own. Then 2 weeks later i got it again, then started spiro. And now a week after that last period ended I am bleeding again, but it's not a normal AF. It looks like old blood- brown, but i don't have cramps and not as much in amount as AF...
Is this similar to what you experienced?
thanks! just trying to figure all this out (as we all are)

Hmm...sometimes. Mine was more like 2 AFs. I would have regular red bleeding for 3-5 days, then quit. Then on CD 11-17 (depending) I would start again and have another 3-5 days of bleeding. The type of blood was the same, although it was shorter than my usual, old AFs (7-11 days). Didn't have too much of the brownish blood during the spiro short AFs. It was definitely enough I had to use pads/tampons--they were AFs, just shorter & every 2 weeks. The blood thing sucked...couldn't even think of wearing white pants. LOL I kept on since I enjoyed the weight loss & clear skin. Also when mini-AF did show up, I felt more energetic & focused and since there were twice as many as usual...probably helped me to get through school in the end. Lord only knows how anemic I probably was. Quit spiro to ttc but still semi-wild AF--not quite as bad though (once every 3 weeks).

Bcp probably would've reigned it in, but I hate bcp and had IUD anyway.
