Default How does met make you lose weight?

I have been on met for most of the last 4.5 years, and I have never seen a significant weightloss. Granted I have been pg 2 time in the last 4 years, but how is it supposed to make you lose wieght? I used to get horrible diarehaa(sp?), is that how you lose it?

Met was never a weight loss drug for me either. It all had to come off by eating better and making myself exercise.

Same here. It helps the pounds come off easier for me, if I eat right and exercise, but I don't lose weight just from the Met alone.

Red face Met & weight loss

I lost weight on Met but only because of the diarhea.
It went on continuously for 3 months, while I tried to get adjusted to it, and by the end of it I'd lost 10 pounds. Unfortunately it came right back on when I went off the Met.
But I've lost it again since and this time I intend to keep it off!
Met wasn't the weight loss method of choice

Diet and exercise will have to be my plan too, but I was just curios how it was supposed to make someone lose weight. Other than helping me get pg, I really don't notice any benefit. Oh well.

Well I was told that the reason has to do with utilizing your insulin. When someone is IR, the cells do not want to accept the insulin your pancreas is pumping out and therefore keeps the stored glucose inside. When Met is taken, it allows the insulin to enter the cells, and then glucose/stored energy/fat are mobilized out and into the blood stream to be used as energy instead of the body being told it is hungry and then just consuming the energy by mouth instead. Does that make sense? All that being said, my obgyn said that she believes it just makes us lose our appetite because it is so gross, and that is how we lose weight! lol I don't know, but the fact is, is that either way, when I eat less, if I am on the Metformin I for sure lose more, then when I eat less and am not. I KNOW it worked for me, and as soon as I am done BF, I will go on it again and hopefully lose some of this pg wt. HTH

Beckee--that is the first reasonalble explanation I have ever gotten. My OB acts as though she really doesn't know how it is supposed to make you lose weight. I guess now that I am actively dieting, I will see how much the met will help. I won't really count on it helping out too much though. Thanks!!!

You are welcome!! That being said, it does work for women who are not IR, but I think it still works in s similar way. I really hope it works for you. Good luck!!
