Please feel free to laugh. Today I decided that I would pick up a HPT while I was getting my medicine at the pharmacy. I am in the "just days away from testing" and want to have them near. Well I put the test on the counter with a paper and my prescription. The cashier rang up my purchase and I paid with my debit card. Having a million and one things on my mind I did not even hear what the total was. I grabbed the bag and walked out the front doors only to hear the BEEP BEEP BEEP. I immediately stepped back in and handed the girl the test to be deactivated, she asked for the receipt which I gave to her. She got a funny look on her face and then called for a manager. As the manager came up the girl tells her as I walked out the alarm sounded she deactivated it BUT it is not on my receipt. Now there are a few customers staring at me and I begin to panic, I have never stole a thing in my life and now here I am going to be arrested for this. The manager looks at me and said come with me, I need you to show me who rang you up. I pointed out the sweet lil old lady who had done the sale and bagged it. The manager said kind of loudly so that more people could here "Did you wait on this lady?" which she said yes. "Did you put this (the test) in her bag" thank god the lady said yes I did. I took a huge deep breath or maybe a sigh of relief. From now on I will look at the receipt before I leave the counter. Sandy
Wow! That is embarrassing. I was at KMart one time, paid in electronics, walked all the way through the store, set the alarm off, went back in only to have an employee tell me to go on that it goes off all the time! What the heck. Then another time my BF and I were leaving the same KMart and watched several people push 2 full carts of stuff out of the door that they didn't pay for. They were dropping stuff on the way out and didn't stop to pick it up. I called to tell the manager, but it was too late by the time they got on the phone. I called and told the lady that answered what happened and she put me on hold for over 3 minutes!!!
My thoughts on that is if they aren't going to check when the stupid thing goes off why not just turn them off so that you don't get embarrassed as you walk out the door! I hate feeling like I did something wrong because I bought a cd/dvd/whatever and the stupid metal tag wasn't deactivated!!! That isn't my fault, but you know people are looking at you like you are a shoplifter!
My BF has something that always makes the buzzers go off when we go shopping. I've seen it happen to other people too. And he's never had anyone come up to him and ask to check his pockets.
I also at 1 time set off the machines at the airport. I was basically naked in front of everyone (I was going on a cruise and blouse was pretty see through) my shoes were sent through then the little wand came out. He waved it over me and it kept going crazy at the back of my thigh. The man finally said after a few minutes that I could go. His explanation was that sometimes our clothes can pick up little slivers of metal and that can set them off.
Another time a 11 year old I was traveling with sent the machine off with his yoo-gi-oh cards. Something in the metal foil that is around the card. Whod a thunk it

I had a tube of blixtex set a metal detector off one time. The scary part of this is that I have a metal plate that is about 6" long and a total of 8 screws in my leg and ankle and that didn't set the metal detector off!!!
Everytime I travel and go throught the security check point at the airport the underwire in my bra sets the thing you walk through off. They take me to the side and check me I always have to tell them its the underwire in my bra.
how funny! I remember one time my dads ciggarettes set it off in the airport. It was becuase of the foil at the top of a new pack. I set one off in Walmart with a pair of shoelaces.
Grrr...that is so embarrassing! And it seems to happen a lot--it's like every time I buy something like cold medicine at Walmart, they forget to deactivate it--so of course, the alarm goes off as you are walking out, and they make you dig through all of your bags to they can check your receipt. I have a lot of complaints about the Walmart--things like that, and the fact that they act like you're a criminal when you try to use a coupon! A few weeks ago, they wouldn't let me use a $1 off coupon on some deoderant, because it was a "bonus" pack with a free sample attached. I was irritated because the coupon says "$1 off ANY". Well, that should mean that I can use it on a bonus, right? Whatever...like the Walmart acts so concerned about their freakin' dollar--when they have such a reputation for being so money hungry while treating their employees so poorly. It's not as if a $1 coupon will make or break them!
Anyways, I think a lot of us are desensitized to the alarms--I don't even look when I hear one going off, because I usually assume it's the store's error, not a stealing customer. My favorite was when my mom and I were at Target on New Year's Day, and all of the Christmas stuff was marked 75 percent off. We bought so much that it was literally falling out of the cart, and it took two cashiers just to get us rung up. As we were leaving, the alarm sounds--go figure! The supervisor comes running up, saying, "Go! Just go!" LOL Apparently, they didn't want to dig through bag after bag of 75 percent off merchandise to find the offending piece of merchandise!

My husband sets off the walmart alarms with his shoes.... there is generally something in the shoe that doesn't deactivate when they run it over the thingy in store. SO he goes off coming and going. I know that some people who shoplift pull the tag (the one that sets the alarm off) off and put it on the bottom of a basket so that when that basket goes out the door the person can walk out with all of the stuff the stole and the person with the basket gets stopped.
I've set the alarm off with condoms (and when youre 17 and buying them it just makes it more embarrasing.
I hate it when you set off the buzzer! I just feel like everyone is staring at you and thinking that you're some shoplifter.
I usually set them off when I walk in, I quickly realized it was because I was returning stuff and the tags were still on them.

At our local kmart and Eckerds my mom and I have frequently set them off going in! I usually keep ibuprofen or something in my purse, and once that did it. Guess I had a new bottle or something. It is pretty strange when you set the alarms off going into the store.
