Default How to get started?

Hi everyone. I just had some questions on how to get started in the adoption process. Dh and I have been discussing it but not sure how to go about it. We want to do a domestic adoption. And would like to adopt anywhere in the ages of infant to 3yrs of age. But how do we get the ball rolling? Do we call our county? I think we would prefer to not do a private agency being as the cost i would think would be alot higher. Also how do you fund your adoptions? I mean was there a loan taken out? Is it cheaper to go with a non private agency like i am thinking? Or do you think a foster to adopt would be better? I live in minnesota and i think there is something called luthren social services as well. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I would call Lutheran Social Services to see what they have. I'm sure you know the most sought out ages are 0-5. So it could take awhile to get a child in that age range. In regards to the funding, people take out loans, have garage sales, etc.

My husband and I are in the process of getting licensed to do foster care and we have opted to do foster to adopt.

Good luck!!

I would call the Luthren Social Services just to see what they have to offer you.

If you choose to do Foster/Adopt, be prepared that some children may come into your home only to leave after many weeks/months. We were fortunate enough to have children come into our home and stay (never had one leave). They were 10 and 24 months when they arrived and were adopted about 14-15 months later. Of course, ours are probably the exception in that neither left our home and both were adopted very quickly.

We had no fundraisers, our adoptions cost about $1000 each, which was re-imbursed by my employer. Sometimes the fees are waived or paid for by CPS. Remember, that there is a tax benefit where un-reimbursed adoption costs can be claimed against your federal taxes - so you will probably get the money back at tax-time.

I send you best wishes in your journey.

Susan

Thank you ladies
My husband and I are thinking we are going to the foster to adopt route. Our neighbors did this and as i know some of the kids are not with us for more then a short time but some are available for adoption.
