Default How high is your testosterone?

My testosterone last month was 198. The RE said they only way we would get it down is on some birth control pills. I agreed to take them for now. I was just wondering how high everyone elses is?

And my progesterone is 4. Weird! I'm more of a man than a woman!

If all your doc's offering is birth control pills, I'm wondering what sorts of tests you've had done. Have you had your insulin checked via a Glucose Tolerance Test (they draw your blood once an hour to see how you respond to sugar)? If not, get that done.

Also, are you seeing an endocrinologist? Metformin works wonders for bringing down testosterone levels in most cysters. Ironically, my RE wouldn't prescribe it a year ago because my insulin wasn't high enough (some doctors will prescribe it just because you have PCOS), but my GYN just prescribed it when my insulin is now LOWER than it was then.

Sorry to have left out somethings. I have been on Met since Feb. I cant remember what my testosterone was then but it wasnt near as high as 198. I stayed on it for about 3-4 months. Had bad side effects, got off for a few months started back on it at about 100mg for about 3weeks. Went to an RE, he done lab work and it was then 198. He changed the met to xr form. Which has worked some better. He put me on fish oil and at my request he at first put me on prometrium. Took it for 10days didnt have a period (which I havent in over a year 1/2). He then got the labs back (198) and said the only way we were going to get it down was birth control pills. He knew I didnt want them at first but I told him if he thought it would do the trick then I would try it. He is a doctor out of houston Tx who is the president of the PCOS chapter in Houston. He is in alot of Magazines as a super doc and he is very good. I guess he knows what he is talking about. Yes, I am wanting to have a baby but he says I have to lose about 44 lbs first so since I cant have one right now I am only waiting on time and weight to go by so I decided I would take the birth control. My insulin was 35. Whish is also very high so we are working on all of that. I know lots of people say that BCP only mask the symptoms but I am on the other meds for it also. Thanks a bunch

Well, I just had some salivary hormone tests done, and my testosterone was 64pg/ml, the normal range being 15-45. So mine's pretty high. In blood tests, the range is 0.2-3.6, and mine is 6.7.

That's interesting, on my labs the range is .1-1.0 and mine is 23.4.

Go figure. I think every country has a different system, different ranges, etc. (I'm in Canada)
What do you do to 'control' your testosterone? Now that I found out I have almost no progesterone, I'll probably be using progesterone cream....don't know what they'll suggest about the testosterone though...

Mine is 41, I heard the cap for females is at 35 so mine is slightly elevated. I have some of the symptoms of PCOS as well so hopefully by cutting out the higher level my problems will be mitigated, which I am doing through diet(South Beach,) exercise, and Met 1000X2. Ortho makes me gain a ton of weight and crave sugar and once I stop it, my life returns to normal so I have to cross my fingers and hope my cycles return like a normal person

I was just wondering if the Dr. that you are seeing in Houston was Dr. Mathias?

I live an hour away from Houston and I was seeing him and from what you described of the Dr that you are seeing it sounded a lot like him, plus the meds he prescribed. Just curious..

TFAAS-The doctors name is Michael Allon. I really like him. I live 4 hours away. I have went to his office once and then I had one phone consultation. He has a website I believe it is www.drallon.com

Thank you for his website. I saw the sample menu for the eating plan and was wondering if you've tried it and if you've had any luck with the plan? I am needing to drop about 50 lbs. The Dr. that I was seeing in Houston, Dr. Mathias, has a similiar plan but you don't get the help you need to come up with menus. It tells you what to eat, what to eat in moderation and what to avoid. I have a hard time with lunch and dinner.. I was even thinking of calling the office to see if I could talk with someone about it.

Thanks again
Traci

No I havent tried the sample meal plan although I know I should be. Most of the time I dont like the type of food that are on the meal plans and I have to modify them anyway.

Post "normal" but...

Mine was 42 before starting spiro, dont' know what it is now. Supposedly that is "normal" but having acne & male-pattern-baldness for a lady at 28 is not "normal." DHEA(s?) were 238 at that same time.

I had taken metformin, which knocked testosterone down into 20s, but then it crept back up and DHEAs skyrocketed out of range. Discontinued metformin due to lack of visible results and insurance fights.

My GTT is slightly abnormal, but RE doesn't want to mess with it, so I am only on spiro right now. I tell ya though *knock on wood* I didn't lose any weight until spiro despite being on IR diet & exercising copiously for 2 years.
