Rivi was born October 6. I know that I should expect to bleed a while since I was almost 25 weeks. I went to the doctor on October 22, and he seemed surprised that I was still bleeding. BUT there was still a cerclage stitch in place, which he removed on the spot. So, I had that last stitch removed 8 days ago. I'm still bleeding lightly, more if I overdo it.
How long is this supposed to last? My doctor told me to come back on day 3 of my period, but how am I supposed to know when/if it starts if I'm still bleeding?
BTW, I can't believe the nimrod missed the stitch - when I was in labor, the assisting doc said it was still in place, and my OB said he'd already cut it, so it shouldn't be causing any problems. Hmm....think that's why I never got past 7 cm dilation? So, now I'm freaking out that I might still have an infection (I'll have him check when I finally go back) because that stitch was still in place, and that's where they said the infection was before. ARGH!!!
Good news - my boobs finally stopped leaking!

My bleeding JUST stopped, and I had Daniel 2 days before you had Rivi. So it might still be normal bleeding. Us PCOS gals can be blessed (cursed) with extra thick lining, so it may take time. Also, the stitch could have just pissed off your cervix, and it's still healing. If you have pain there or abnormal discharge, it might be infected still/again.
And you're lucky, my boobs are still going

Daniel Benjamin born/died October 4, 2004. Ari Lev born/died May 21, 2005.
I don't know if this helps, but after Anna was born, I bled for about three weeks, it was only heavy for the first week or so, then it kind of tapered off. Then there was some really gross yellow mucous. About 1 week later, I started to bleed a little with some mild cramping for about a day or two. Then the bleeding stopped, and the yellow mucous continued until I got my first postpartum period 6 weeks after Anna's birth. I'm just finishing up my 3rd period (regular) since her birth (July 14, 2004). I'm pretty happy about this because up until 2 1/2 years ago, I only had a period 4 times in my whole life! (I'm 32!).
Just thought I'd tell you my experience as my pregnancy was 24 weeks long.
I would imagine it would be the same amount of bleeding as if you carried to full term since you were so far along so that would be sometimes 8 weeks. When I miscarried at 5 weeks a few years ago I bled for 6 weeks and it took my period about 3 months to get on track.

Oh, please, not eight weeks. And three months for my body to straighten out will drive me crazy. Although that would tie in with when we want to TTC, I would like to have a sex life again - it's been five months (I know, that's nothing compared to next time with cerclage, full-term, etc)!
I am having some pain in my cervix. It was bad enough today to take Motrin, but still bearable. I am definitely worried about an infection, but there's no weird discharge or anything. It's only been 8 days since he took out that last stitch, but I didn't have pain until today. I think I'll head back to the doc early for cultures/etc if this goes on a few more days.
Another question - I'm not supposed to go back until day 3 of my next period - if that takes three months, am I still allowed to have sex at postpartum 8 weeks? I never even asked...I think I just wanted to get the hell out of the office because I was listening to some woman's fetal monitor in the next exam room, and I was in the same room as I was when we discovered my IC.

Alright I'll warn you not to read on because this will be TMI....
I probably wouldn't have sex unless the doctor told you it was okay. They are supposed to recheck you to tell you everything is okay. You'll get a horrible infection you don't want if you don't pay attention to it. Trust me, I was kind of spotting in between thinking well it'll probably be okay, right? Wrong....I got an infection and started having this yellowish almost like there was pus in the discharge and it smelled weird too. They ended up putting me on antibiotics and some lidocaine to ease the pain I ended up with down there. If it doesn't clear up, definitely check with the doc.

Viv,
I'm sorry to hear about this ongoing nightmare. I had lochia for 21 days, at the end of which was very light. On that 21st day, I got cycle day one and was actually quite startled, thinking it would be several weeks. A quick call to my midwife's office put my mind at ease that it can happen that fast for a non-breastfeeding mom. I think that you are still in the regular phase of post partum lochia. We had sex less than two weeks after the baby came, and my midwife told me that this is also common for full termers, though healthcare providers would like to see us wait four weeks or longer. With your stitch gone for more than a week, as long as you are not currently infected in there, I'm sure you're fine. [Your doctor is indeed an idiot for leaving that in there all this time. Weird.]
I don't know about pain in your cervix. That would probably be something to call the nurse about.
And normally we should see the doc 6 or 8 weeks post partum. If he wants to see you on day 3, that might be too long. And what would he do then anyway, fertility stuff? If you aren't confident about this doctor, it might be good for you to change before the next pregnancy. Maybe before the next visit!
Good luck,
Sheri

I bled for not quite 6 weeks after I lost Isaac. Then three weeks or a month after I stopped I got my first period. I had my first post partum about two days after I stopped bleeding and they told me that we could have sex again as soon as I had stopped bleeding and I felt I could. If you don't get your period within a month of the bleeding stopping why not just make an appointment to see your doc and find out if everything is ok.

Thanks for all of the insight, guys. I think I'm going to have to go back to the doc earlier than he asked, anyway. Since I know I had an infection when Rivi was born, I'm really paranoid about it still being there. I think I want cultures sent off.
Esmeralda, I think I'll wait awhile before trying sex. I'm paranoid enough about infection!
I think my biggest problem is that the bleeding is a constant reminder. Not that I want to forget Rivi, but it would be nice not to always be reminded that he's gone.
