Default How long is BCP effective after you stop it?

Hi Ladies,

Aren't you supposed to get your period for a few cycles more at least after stopping the pill? I finished Diane in July, got a period in the end of july/beginning of August, and then again in the third week of August. Still waiting for September. I doubt I could be pregnant, because we were trying to avoid it. But I did get a little streaking yesterday afternoon, but nothing today. AF feels like it is definitely on its way. My breasts feel awful, and the pigmentation around my nipples is much darker then I'm used to.

I guess I'm on or about CD30. I'm not sure if I count day one as the first sight of blood, or day one as the first flow of bright red blood. Anyway, I was hoping that af would be regular for some time at least, since I'd been on the pill for two years. I guess I'll wait a little while longer, and just hope my weight loss helps to kick start it again.

Any advice??

Thanks

I don't get AF at all after stopping the pill. The first time I went off to try and get preg. I kept waiting and no show. I believe some people do get af more regularly than I do. I can go a year without it. You should count any form of spotting or bleeding as day one. Good luck!

The pill stops being effective pretty much immediately after you stop taking it. I would take a test to rule out pregnancy , esp with the streaking. The streaking could be a sign of implantation bleeding. However, your period can be screwed up also by now.

Hmm, thanks ladies. Still no sign of af yet, even though I feel it is strongly on its way. I am also wondering if my period is messed up by now, since I am normally irregular off the pill. Only that doesn't explain the streaking, and strong menstrul pains. Mind you my body has been through a lot over the last 5 years. I had a second-trimester loss, uterine surgery, and gave birth. I've since lost about 40 lbs, so I really have NO idea what my body is going to do now that I'm off the pill. When I've taken bcp in the past, my period usually stuck around for a few cycles after stopping. I think I will wait and see what happens over the weekend.

Thanks again!

Hey Diamond,

Actually, I'm on Diane 35 as well. My doctor told me that this particular pill is effective for 2-3 months after one comes off. It's important to avoid pregnancy during this time, because the effects of the pill can harm the baby (especially with Diane).

However, your period should still be brought on by the effect of the pill...so I'm not sure about that part.

Anyway - I'm coming off Diane 35 in a couple of months - I've been on it for almost 5 years, so it should be interesting...

Good luck!

I know the pill wasn't effective for me after I stopped taking it. Less than two weeks after I went off I became pregnant. I thought I was safe but, lucky for me, I was wrong. The dark pigment around the nipples is usually a sign of pregnancy but I noticed that months into my pregnancy. Maybe you should take a pregnancy test to be sure. Good luck.

Echobelly, that is what I thought too! So I got my period for the last month I took, and then again a few weeks later (a week early), and then nothing in September except that little bit of streaking. I took a HPT yesterday and it was negative. I'm not sure what I should do from here. Should I have a bhcg just in case? I'm sure if the hpt was negative, the blood test will be too. But I still feel like af is on her way, I just wish SOMETHING would happen by now.

MomLeia, wow two weeks later!? How was your pregnancy? I've read conflicting reports about conceiving right off the pill. Some say it is safe, some show caution. I think the Diane site says it is ok. But one never knows with these things.

Thanks again.

Diamond, I think you should get your bloodwork done, just to make sure. Also, have your insulin levels tested as well - sometimes this can throw your hormones out of whack (as it does for PCOS ladies who aren't on the pill).

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Wanted to point out this this is true but it is *not* the same as saying fertility returns immediately after stopping the pill... sometimes you will begin ovulating right away, sometimes it can take up to 6 months for your cycles to return to "normal."

I have had it happen both ways. Usually when I go off BCPs, nothing happens... but when I took Alesse, for some reason after stopping that pill I had normal cycles for a while.

Normally I hardly ovulate at all ...

For some women with PCOS, the pill keeps hormones "normal" and allows for a few normal cycles when you go off, until things get all screwey again. But then for others, they go off the pill and nothing happens for months on end.

I don't know why we all react so differently, but we do.

As for getting preg right after the pill... well I got pregnant ON the pill and my baby was fine. For most pills, the concern is a. body won't be building a good lining for the first few cycles so embryo may not implant well and b. irregularity of cycles will make it harder to date the pregnancy - but this point is trivial IMO. You can always check w/ ultrasound. Diane seems to be in a special category because of the strong anti-androgen properties... this pill may actually be harmful if you get pregnant on it or right off of it. I got pregnant on Yasmin which also has anti-androgen properties but I don't think it is as strong as Diane. The Yasmin is equivalant to a 25mg dose of Spironalactone which is *very* low...

Well, I had bloodwork done today. Hopefully will find out in the next couple of days. I am having even stronger mestrul pains today, especially this evening. Almost contraction-like. My breast are still sore, and the blue veins are very visible, I was like 'wth'....and there are little bumps that come and go around my nipples. I also had a bought of nausea this morning.

I don't know what to think. I don't want my mind to be playing tricks on me, making me think I could be pregnant. I know for some women, they want it so bad, that they make themselves believe it. But for us, we actually decided to stop trying until the New Year. So this will be quite the surprise if it is true.

About Diane being harmful, I really hope that isn't true. Maybe for women who don't have pcos, but since we do and our androgens are already sky high, I'm hoping it wouldn't have an adverse effect. I remeber asking my doc last year if/when I was ready to conceive if I could just use my last period on diane instead of taking provera to bring on a period (for clomid), and she said yes....so I'm pretty sure she would have an idea about it.

Thanks for all your input!

If you are pregnant (and it sounds promising, I can't believe you haven't tested at home!) and if Diane is harmful even right after DCing it, I would think you had been off it long enough that is it out of your system to where the medication in it wouldn't be harmful to a pregnancy. I'm not expert of course but after 2 cycles off, I'd think the harmful stuff would pretty much have to be cleared from your body by now.

Runner< I actually did take an hpt on the 23rd (negative). I got a negative result on my bloodwork done yesterday. I don't know what to think. My breasts hurt even more today, my nipples have a blue tinge even. I am having crazy menstrual pains, with contraction pains to boot. I'm confused with this whole pcos garbage. If I'm not pregnant, and obviously not ovulating, then why on earth do I feel this way? I've been pregnant twice before and I have to tell you how ironically familiar these feelings are. Why am I feeling like marbles are bursting out of both my ovaries...why are my breasts so soar....why are my nipples on fire......ugh.

Should I wait a couple more weeks, or go see my Gyn?
