I was wondering how long we need to be on the met before it begins to do it's work?
I'm not ttc but am IR and have been on met before. I stopped it when the bloat got so bad, but now I'm packing on the pounds since I stopped it last year even though I eat low carb/no sugar and exercise.
I've been on 1,000 mg for one month and started 2,000 mg. a few days ago.
The last time I was on it I was able to lose weight and felt so much better all the way around, but I forgot how long it took to start working.
Can I expect it to work this time too? Thanks for any comments.
I'm not really sure what you are asking, but it may just be the sun frying my head today For me my hormone levels took a while to come back down to a normal range. I had to change the way I ate first. But met never helped me lose weight if that is what you are asking. Hope someone can be more helpful...

I take 1500mg of Met XR. I started at the beginning of June with 500mg and increased each week until I got to the theraputic dose.
After about 10 days -- the brain fog started to clear. I felt & feel more focused and not so scatter brained. I have noticed that the bad hair has stopped growing so fast & I have lost 4 pounds. Good Luck & stick with it!

I've only been on it for 13 days and I have lost about 11 pounds. But, I have no appetite at all and have been eating low carb which is a HUGE change in diet for me, so I'm not sure if it's so much the medicine or the diet that is making me lose weight.
Met started doing it's job right away with me...my labs took a *slight* drop within 6 months and my periods came in about 3 months. It was small, but in the right direction.
But until I got doing *my* job...eating better and committed to exercise, it was over a year until my hormones started dropping into the normal ranges. So don't forget lifestyle is key and will affect how fast the meds can help.
Good luck!

I've been eating low carb and no sugar/caffeine since 2,000 and I walk everyday and do weights and have for quite sometime, so I've got the lifestyle down pat. With that in mind, can I expect the met to work again like it did last time? The last time I took it I was able to lose the weight right away because of my lifestyle but this time it seems perhaps not.
I edited this to add that I've gained two more pounds since upping the dose on met in spite of lifestyle, this is what I'm trying to find out...maybe I've forgot how long it took last time to start working.
Thanks.
I've noticed that I am not hungry in the mornings, (I take my Met at lunchtime) and start to get hungry as the afternoon rolls through. I'm on the slow release dose so that makes sense. I am also noticing I have a lot of energy of a morning too. I've only been taking it for a week!
It took a week for me to get rid of the brain fog but it took almost 6 months to get my periods back.
I think it only helped me lose a couple pounds in the beginning because just about everything I ate went right threw me (sorry, tmi)

I have been on Met since March '06 and am currently taking 2000 mgs a day, I am starting to feel human again - granted I haven't lost any weight, but I generally feel better. I was told by my endo that it can take up to a year to see any significant results, so I am just taking it a day at a time and we shall see what a year brings.
With that in mind, can I expect the met to work again like it did last time?
So many factors are at play...what your labs and sugars are like before vs now, sleep, stress, lifestyle. It sounds like you're on the right track, but it will probably take a few weeks to get everything regulated again on the drug and you can go from there. I guess what I'm saying is, there is no guarantees for a timeline.
Some women with easily moved hormones or hormones that are pretty close to normal can see signs of improvement fairly quickly. Others have to be more patient with their hormones while they get realigned on the drug.
A study i read by one Dr indicated that aout 25% of women get regular menses within 3 months, about 50% to 95% begin regular menses within 6 months and about 50% of women begin having regular ovulatory menses after 6 months.

Christy,
Thanks for your indepth reply.
I'm not trying to get an af, I'm post meno pcos. I lived thru pcos when doctors didn't know much about it and didn't treat it, apparently.
My gyn knows I suffered with that as a younger woman and wants me to be on the met to help with my weight loss issues and hopefully stave off the diabetes that runs rampent in my family.
The article was very interesting, thank you for taking the time to post it.
I don't seem to be having the same success in this go round with the met, perhaps I just need to give it more time. Thanks again.
