Unhappy How long before Metformin worked for you???

Hello,

I need some encouragement from those of you who have had success with Metformin! I have been on it for a little over 2 weeks now and I'm stressing about if it will work for me! I don't ovulate due to PCOS so my doc thought I was a perfect candidate for the Met. If it doesn't work within 2 months we are going to add Clomid. I am just so impatient! Everything else checks out great (sperm, HSG) so it seems that all I need is an eggie! Well, my question is...How long did it take for you to see results with Met.??? Thanks for any input!

Default Patience, patience

I think your doctor may be rushing you. Two months is NOT enough time to give Met a chance to work. I started taking it in May, and it brought my first af in 8 months just four weeks later. AF has been a regular visitor ever since.

My doctor also gave me a Clomid prescription the same day I got the Met. I wanted to give Met a try first, though, having read how it regulates your hormones and helps you ovulate. Well, getting AF back was just the first step. A couple of months later the brain fog and the moodiness was gone, and now, six months later, I ovulated by myself! for the first time in what? three years...

Unless you're in a real hurry, give it a few more months. For some people it works more quickly, for others it takes a little longer, but I think it's safe to say that two months is definitely a little too much on the short side...

Just my 2 cents... HTH

It cleared my brain fog, brought back af, helped me lose weight, made me o' again, and helped me get pregnant. My first Metformin miracle is now 3 years old, my second (surprise one) arrived December11!

Thanks for your input! I know 2 months is not that long, but I am very impatient! My doc is not rushing me at all & I totally trust his opinion. I have to get blood drawn on 9/30 so he can see what my horomone levels are looking like. Hopefully he'll be able to see if it's having an impact on me by that time. It will be 3 1/2 weeks since I started the Met. when I get that done. Well, congrats on your O! Thanks again for your reply!

My Dr tried to rush me on met. I managed to get him to keep me on it longer than he wanted and did he get a surprise when it wasn't as f~a~s~t as he thought! I was on it for *10 weeks* before I got my period, *13 months* before my free andorgen and testosterone showed any significant drop and my periods came regularly, *2 years* before my insulin, triglycerides, HDL, testosterone and androgen went to "normal" values.

2 months is FAR too soon to see if it will work. I would give it at least 12 months, given what i went through. Honey, I understand your impatience, but you can't rush your hormones. It took years to get them bungled, and it is time-consuming to get everything straightened out. If you want to give met a fair try, you need to give it time. Your labs may not show any improvement in 3 weeks time...most Dr's won't even test for 12 weeks because of the time needed to get Met built up in your system.

Give it time, and don't be discouraged. Met is a wonderful thing, but it is not as instant as the medical people would like us to think. We're talking about fixing body chemicals here and they don't follow physician's schedules.

Hang in there!

I was on 1500 mg met for 6months with no noticeable change in my body other than af came a little more regularly, but my hormone levels were still a mess. Once it was upped to 2550mg I started responding better...had 40-45 day cycles and o'ed. All in all I was on for 9 months, began charting to make sure I was o'ing, started low-carbing as well, and became pregnant. This is after 7 years of ttc #2.

I agree... 2 months isn't long enough for met to work its 'magic'. Met worked fairly quickly for me the first time I took to TTC our son. I got pg the first month we used Clomid after being on the met for 7 months. During that 7 months we were not TTC but it definitely balanced things out for me since I conceived so quickly. I've been on Met most recently since around the early part of May and it has taken almost 4 months for me to start feeling a lot more like myself. I went off the pill a couple of weeks ago and am feeling really good. This is a huge change from in the past when I would go off the pill and instantly feel terrible and gain 10 lbs! I LOVE met and would gladly take it for the rest of my life if need be. Good luck on TTC... I understand your impatience... I was the same way.

I also agree. I've been on Met for 1 1/2 years and am just now starting to feel better. My dosage slowly went up from 500 to 1500 (this is 4th cycle on XR) and it wasn't until I started Met XR that my cycles started normalizing. They now are coming every 26 to 28 days! A first for me, as they used to range from 17 days to five months pre-met, and around 35 days on regular met. My RE still doesn't think I'm ovulating, but at least it's a move in the right direction.
