So after battles with Canadian doctors, my thyroid was finally treated when my anti thyroid anti bodies came back three times higher than the highest end of the reference range.
At first my Synthroid dose was minimal(as it still is) only taking 25 mcg a day, then alternating days between 25 & 50 mcg. My TSH started to normalize and I even started getting periods. Well a couple months later when they tested again(my periods stopped) My TSH was 4.XX so my doctor upped my dose to 50 mcg everyday.
My next TSH came back at <0.09 so we lowered my dose of Synthroid to Mon-Fri 50 mcg & Sat-Sun 25 mcg.
I am to have my labs done tomorrow and I have no idea if my thyroid is going to work with me or against me.
However I am curious on the average length of time it takes for one to get stabilized on their Synthroid dose. It seems like this has been going forever(Started in January 2007)
Thanks
You have Hashimoto's and it's very common for patients to swing from hyper to hypo and cycle back around again. If you have time, read the post below this one and my comments on Selenium. Here's the link. If you take Selenium everyday, it will lower your antibodies and help stabilize your TSH. Throughout the rest of your life, you will have to have dosage increases as your thyroid becomes less and less functionable. Also, the more antibodies you have, the more damage your thyroid will receive.
Also, make sure you are taking your meds consistently and never skipping a dose. Always with water only...and at about the same time everyday. Not doing this can cause drastic changes in TSH.

Thanks for your help.
I was never officially dx'd with Hashimoto's however everything that I read pointed to it.
I just got a copy of my lab this morning and looks like my TSH is 7.1
For the first time in a long time I was religous about taking my meds so I am still in shock that my thyroid is misbehaving so much.
I will definately look into using Selenium to help.
Thank you so much for your help.
I'm hypothyroid (radioactive iodine following graves disease about 16 yrs ago) and it always is hard work to regulate my dosage. I had to change doses with my last pregnancy and miscarriage and I am just now getting to the point where we are finding the just right dose - 5 to 6 months later.
Personally, I start to see a change in symptoms withing 2 to 3 weeks of a dose change, but blood test results don't level out until 6 weeks or so.
My last change was of 62.5 mcg a week (cut my Sunday dose in half) and I suspect it has has me heading from hyperthyroid back into hypothyroid territory. With my TTC and thyroid history I need to keep my TSH on the low end of normal, and that's where I feel the best anyway.

Thanks for sharing Kikibee & Meri.
My doctor got my lab results this morning and called me at work to tell me my thyroid is giving him gray hair and my family doctor's office called to see if my other doctor was taking care of it. My dr. has changed me back to taking 50mcg everyday with hopes that my TSH won't jump to the other end of the spectrum like it did last time I was taking 50 mcg/ day.
I hope that things start to even out soon. Before I know it, a year will have passed since I originally started trying to get my thyroid controlled.
I hope they get it figured out for you!
Also, I thought I'd mention something my cousins (who are all hypothyroid) told me. There are foods and things that can mess with thyroid absorption and screw up your levels. You might know all of this already but I thought I'd mention it in case you didn't. I found this site which kind of sums up some of the stuff my cousins told me.
For me it took about 3months to get the dose right. In that time frame they also realized I needed cytomel and synthroid. Since it has been right for about 2yrs they have only had to adjust it once. For my mom though it took them 2yrs to get hers right her thyroid was really out of wack.I believe it just depends on how bad off your thyroid is. Keep with it once they get it adjusted to the right dose you will feel so much better.GL!!!
Thanks for the info Meri. I am guessing since my E2 was 3300 the same day that my TSH was tested that it made a huge difference with my Thyroid.
However even when I am not on a ton of Estrogen my thyroid seems to misbehave but glad to understand what was going on last week, a little better.
Thanks Ella, wow 3 months sounds like a walk in the park. I came across a post from 2005 when I was trying to find a doctor to treat my TSH levels and it just seems like my thyroid issues have been going on forever. 2 years to get treated & year to get titrated. I am hoping that things are solved sooner rather than later.
Yes,I was blessed that it didn't take long at all for them to get my thyroid regulated. It took me 4yrs to find a doc.that actually agreed with me that that I had thyroid problems. Course for me once the doc.agreed and fixing it being quick,on the other hand I haven't found any doc.or drug that has helped my PCOS so for me that is extremely frustrating just like you thyriod is for you. Hold on and keep trying.
