Default How long does it take for MET. to work?

Hey everyone,
Over the past year and a half I gained about 14 lbs (after going off bc)...and have recently been put on Met. to help ovulate. I have been on it now for about a month and lost a couple lbs (maybe 5ish). I know everyone is different...but I have three Met. Questions:

1) How long did it take for you to get your period?
2) For those of you who were at your highest weight before met, how long did it take you to return to your "normal" weight again?
3) How much are you taking of met?

THANKS!!

hey

1) 60 or so days - but it was anovulatory. i am still waiting to ovulate.
2) i am working on weight loss. i gained 10lbs going off BC. I didn't lose anything on Met - but now I am low-sugar and am down around 3lbs in under 2 weeks.
3)1500mg a day

GL!

Kch2,

I am in the same boat. Ive been taking Met for a month now and no period. I am just keeling over in anticipation of AF considering i havent gotten it since November 07!!! YIKES!

And i actually have put on 1-2 lbs over the last month. Wierdly my appetite has grown! probably a good thing though as i was only 106 lbs prior to Met.

I am only on 1000mg....we will see what happens. If i dont have a period next month, im going to go see a reproductive endo.

Good luck!

2) For those of you who were at your highest weight before met, how long did it take you to return to your "normal" weight again? n/a I have never needed to lose weight via met

Default everyday is longer....

Hi, I've been on 500mg. Met. for 2 months, I was 95lbs. before, was told to gain weight (I'm 5'4'' btw.) so now I'm 110-113lbs, no ovulation yet (at least i don't think so, haven't Ov'd for 2 years). And I'm now waiting for my next appt. so I can see what's next if this isn't what should be happening now. I really hate this. I'm not used to feeling so much heavier, my clothes don't fit, I'm hormonal a lot, and I'm annoyed with those who are getting pregnant so easily or on 'accident'. Ugh!!!! Is anyone similar to this? I hope at least I helped someone going through the same deal feel not so-alone. Thanks, almost feel a bit better venting to someone other than my poor-hubby.

For me its taken 3-4 months to get its maximum effect (ie get pregnant... all three times whatever month I start met is the month I give birth the following year). I was at my highest at diagnosis (125 lbs at 5'4.5" and was down to 109 about 3 months later... which was too skinny for me, prefer about 112) I started ovulating sooner, but I guess they weren't "good enough" ovulations to get me pregnant. The second time I got down to 107 which was WAY too skinny (especially since I was still nursing) and I looked sickly! I got pregnant on my first ovulation but 3-4 months on met. (breastfeeding may have had an effect on that) The third time I started about 115 and got down to my ideal 112 and pregnant in 3-4 months. This time, I'm on it but I'm not sure if I've ovulated yet (thought I did, but either I'm pregnant and the test was wrong or I didn't really ovulate... probalby didn't ovulate is my guess) I'm about 117-118 (but only 6 months postpartum) and my weight is coming off more slowly then the other times and I'm still nursing. My doseages are in my signature.

Default Met

Hi Girls,
I have started met today 2 x 500mg per day. I had to force my consultant to let me try it and I have managed to get a 3-month prescription from him so I am hoping it will work. I am 5'4.5" and 112Ibs. I am hoping it will work to help regulate my cycle. I currently don't have any cycle and am taking duphaston from tomorrow to induce a bleed, then starting injections on June 28th. Here's hoping!

Purple- I think the general consensus is that it can take up to 6 months so if you don't get the results in that 3 months, I'd try getting it a little longer. Good luck!

Thanks TrishainAZ, hoping I will have some luck by then - feel so unfotunate in this ttc journey. Told in 05 when dx that it would just take 1-3 months to 'get me pregnant' with clomid. Stupid gynae never enlightened me to the reality of this nightmare!
Were you taking ovulation meds as well as met to conceive your three?

No, just met for me, but I did ovulate... just infrequently. At first it was about 3-4 times a year and then with my second I was nursing and I got pregnant on my first ovulation after giving birth (so no period betwen kids). With my third my cycles were a little closer, about 35-45 days long.

Oh and 1000 mg may do it, but most people are on 1500-2000 mg. If you have troubles with your doctor, maybe read the stickies at the top of the thin thread, print them out and take them with you. However... met doesn't work for everyone, so not trying to imply that it will for sure work for everyone the way it did for me. Good luck!!!

Very interesting TrishainAZ - I am lucky to have gotten the met at all from my consultant - he is so reluctant to give it to me as I am not "typical" pcos in his opinion just because I am thin, do not have acne, excess hair etc. I do have cysts on my ovaries though and none of the other meds are working properly for me and he won't let me do IVF til I do another 6 rounds of injections since the drilling.
I am hoping the met will work wonders for me. You had great success and you are about same weight and height as me. Did they just give you met straight away without trying anything else?

Yep, it was the first treatment we tried. You can check with Pblazyod (or something like that!) I know she tried a bunch of treatments only to get pregnant on the first cycle of met (again results may not be typical... I sound like a weight watchers commercial) I wish you the very best luck (and yes we are almost exactly the same size... would be if I weren't still carrying my baby weight!)

Dear Kch2 and other gals who are curious.....I got my period almost EXACTLY one month after starting Metformin ER 1000mg daily!!! How crazy is that? And i hadnt gotten a period since i got off of BC in November 07. I guess my body just needed that bump to get me over the hump. Hopefully I ovulate this month too!!!
