Just wondering how long a home study is good for. This is our 2nd time adopting and was wondering if we can use the same home study and just have it updated or if you have to start all over.

How long has it been since your last homestudy? It's only good for one year then you can update it with in so many years (like 3 or something like that) each place is different I'm sure.

Well the only thing would be to call and find out if you can just get it updated

It depends on the state. Some are 1 year - some are a year & 1/2. 2004 definitely needs an update. Also, any change in household situation - birth/adoption of child, moving, etc requires an updated homestudy as well. Most agencies will update the study for like $1,000. I understand the social services department for the state can do it too for like $200.

It really depends on your state laws. The only way to know would be to call the agency you're going to use. Some agencies also have specific rules as to how long a homestudy & update are good for.
FYI: The state social services will only complete homestudies or homestudy updates if you're adopting from the state (I'm almost positive that goes for every state, otherwise everyone would be going to the state agency for cheap homestudies/updates).
Our homestudy was $1000 & the update was (I think) $500. We also need 2 post placement visits for $1000. So we spent $2500 for the homestudy, update, & 2 post placement visits.
Good Luck!
