Question How long should I wait?? (re: Met & TTC)

I've been on Metformin since April 26. We've been TTC #1 since July '06. The doctor walked me out the door saying "We'll try this for 6 months, but I'm CONFIDENT we'll see you back in 6-8 weeks when you're 4-6 weeks pregnant."

I'm on 500mg 2x/day. I also take an aspirin for a clotting disorder and one generic Welbutrin for depression.

Well it's not been 6 months yet, but those 8 weeks have been LONG gone. I just want to know how to tell if it's "working" yet! I usually temp, my cycles haven't gotten any shorter - I ovulate (read: My temp spikes. Apparently this does NOT necessarily mean I'm O'ing) regularly CD28ish. I start anywhere from CD 40 to CD50.

I had one SUPER horrlble period my cycle in May that ended in June. But I BARELY spotted for three days in July. I CONVINCED Myself I was pg, but a few tests confirmed I'm not.

Soooo, how do I explain to my doctor that this stuff isn't working??? My only evidence is that I'm not PG yet!!!

Thanks for any advice or experiences that you've had

I'm still new to met and pcos myself; however, what I have read states it can take a few months to a few years to get the full benefits from Metformin. I know a woman who was put on met and was pregnant with in 6 weeks; unfortunately, that isn't always the case. I've also read most doctors consider 1500mg the optimum dosage for ttc. Is 1000mg your dose until your next appointment or does you doctor want you to increase it over time?

When my doctor put me on met he seemed confident it wouldn't take me long to conceive too. I'm not sure how to know if it is working. The literature my doctor gave me said it is considered to be working if "you demonstrate an improvement in your af cycles, acne, hirsutism, or have weight loss." All of my labs came back normal (all hormones, thyroid etc), so my doctor won't be able to tell me if met is working based on my follow up labs. For women who's tests came back abnormal a blood test to see how those counts are responding to the met will tell the doctor if the met is helping. I think met is working for me because in the 4 weeks since I started met I have lost 11 lbs. I am also dieting and exercising, but no more than I was before I started the met.

If you are concerned about it call your doctor and ask. It couldn't hurt.

I'd make a call to your doctor. I was told (by the nurse) to give the Met about three months to see if it did anything & then make changes if needed. So far, I don't seem to have had any changes, but I guess I'll see after this forced period.

Three months was my doctor's waiting time too. I finally started met mid-July, my follow up appointment is Oct 15. At that appointment he'll discuss my further options. He gave me provera in July to bring on AF, but won't give it to me again until at least my next appointment. My doctor wants to see if the met alone if enough to bring af back regularly and hopefully help me o.

I think my doctor's approach is a little more laid back since I conceived without any medical assistance (no met, no nothing). For that reason I think he's going to wait a while before he starts me any fertility drugs. Just my guess based on my past experience with him. I didn't ask honestly, I was still in shock over the pcos diagnoses.

All of my labs came back normal (all hormones, thyroid etc), so my doctor won't be able to tell me if met is working based on my follow up labs.

1000 was all he said. I was on 500 for a week (with 0 side effects) and went to 1000. I've been there since the first week of May.

They didn't do any labs, so I don't know.... I've had my thyroid tested in the past, though, and it was normal.

Thanks! I'm going Sept. 12th, so I guess we'll see then! We've been TTC for 13 months now, and I just want to get this taken care of!!!!

Have you tried the ovulation monitor? We did that with the met and preggers both times within 2 months. And I have never ever had a regular period!

I have been on met since July when I was dx with PCOS. i haven't seen any results of course it hasn't been that long... OBGYN forced af in July and she came at the end. No visit from af since then. We will see if sept brings af??
i guess the next thing will be clomid. DH and I have decided on no fert drugs but if clomid is only to make me ovulate may try??

My endo told me the same thing regarding Met. I asked her back in May about adding Clomid and she felt strongly that Met was all I needed to ovulate. AF is arriving on its own, but my cycles have been 60, 26, 19, and 42 days. Not very regular.
