Hello fellow soul cysters....I am on 1000mg of metformin twice daily and it is giving me severe diarrhea. At least like 1-2 times a day. HOw long should this last until my body gets use to the metformin? If it lasts too long, should I call the doc? any advice would be helpful thanks

Is this your starting dose? 2000mg a day? Holy moly! It might literally be too much for you to stomach. Go back to 500mg a day, taken with food, until you have no more stomach problems, then take two 500mg pills a day, spaced 12 hours apart, still taken with food. Then keep increasing by another 500mg to your final dose once your body has adjusted.

For more information, check out the Metformin FAQ sticky at the top of this forum.

Hang in there, it gets better, and it is definitely worth it.

It cleared my brain fog, brought back af, helped me lose weight, made me o' again, and helped me get pregnant. My first Metformin miracle is now 3 years old, my second (surprise one) arrived December11!

I was started on 1500mg and even on that they introuduced it in a way that I started with 500mg once a day for a week and then the next week i took 500mg two times a day with food for another week and then if after two weeks i was handling it okay I could go up to 500mg 3 times a day WITH FOOD. I will admit it took me several days the first week to adjust and I swear I have never been so regular, it lessened the third week and by the time I had been on it a month the only thing I noticed was a total lack of appetite and having to go to the restroom more often!

I am now on 2000mg.

Question

Hmmm not sure what to think. I was to start taking 500mg twice a day today, but I am having stomach pain and still diarrhea, so my obgyn said to wait another week of just 500mg w/dinner. April, wishing you patience to get through, let us know how you are doing with it when you can.
Think positive myndee, sounds like you're doing well on it *thumbs up*
