I started off on 500mg of the xr met for about 3 weeks and have now been on 425mg of "normal" met for 2 weeks and just went up to 850mg today, working up to 1700mgs. I'm also on a low GI diet as per advice from my Gyno and Nutritionist. I've stopped drinking soft drinks, eating more protein, lots of fruit and vegies, lots of water, wholegrain bread, very little pasta, no potatoes etc, and have increased my exercise.
So far I have not lost any weight AT ALL, not even half a pound. I need to lose 50lbs. I know I'm being impatient lol but was just wondering how long it was before people started losing weight and what dosage of Met seemed to make a difference???
Also, I'm feeling lightheaded quite a bit, is this a side effect of Met???
I need some inspiration here ... PLEASE HELP!!!
Hugs

I'm not counting calories, so I don't know how many I have in a day. How do I work that out?? My Nutritionist has me following a low GI diet especially because I'm really insulin resistant. She didn't tell me to count calories.

What type of exercise program are you on?
I'm not on an exercise program as such, I've just been moving more, like going for brisk walks. However I'm going to suss out and hopefully join Curves tonight.

Have you also taken your measurements to see if they've changed?
No I haven't but I will do that, good idea!

Do you weigh yourself at the same time every morning?
Yes, I've been weighing myself first thing in the morning, before breakfast and after I've had a big pee lol

Hi there. I just started my fifth week on Met (2 weeks of 500 mg and now up to 1000mg). I have kept my sugar intake quite low, eat only whole grain/whole wheat and lots of protein. My nutritionist mentioned eating 3 meals and 3 snacks a day, always with great amounts of protein. It took about 3 weeks before I ever started to lose weight. I have since lost 6 pounds (which I'm so excited about!). I've also walked for about an hour 4-5 times a week. I was disappointed at first about not losing anything for a while, but it now seems to be coming off much faster than before. I hope that helps a little...definitely keep up what you're doing...it'll eventually work!! Good luck

For calories, just start keeping track of portion sizes, and plug them into something like FitDay to get your nutritional count for the day. Once you get your calories 'stable', and add in the exercise, you should start to see 'progress' on the scale.

Counting calories was important for me. I was told that 1200 calories was a great place to start in loosing weight. Carbs are your enemy. I ate cottage cheese, cheese, meat of all kinds, strawberries, salad ( no carrots ). I could eat alot of these items so i did not feel hungry but as soon as you eat carbs or sugar your body with pcos does'nt responde well to it and you dont loose weight. At least for me that has been the case. The met makes a difference because it helps break down the carbs and sugars you do eat. Hope it helps good luck and keep trying it will happen but it is alot of work.
Sorry to hear you've hard a hard time losing weight so far!!
I started a low G.I Diet on March 30th. I eat 3 small meals, and 3-4 snacks a day. (Somtimes my days are really long, so I try to eat something every 2 hours. Which is why I add an extra snack in there sometimes)
And I also started Met 500mg a week ago...and so far have dropped about 7lbs so far.
Keep going with what you're doing!! Track calories, and see how it goes!!
Best of luck!

I started met feb 22 and have lost 15-20lbs as of now. I dont count anything, just monitor my carbs and eat "good" carbs. I need to start exercising and maybe the 5lbs flucuation will stop. I have about 100lbs to lose and met have given me a great push. Keep going strong and the weight will come off. Also, have u noticed a difference in ur clothes? Maybe no weight loss, but tons of inch loss
It's interesting, I put on a pair of pants I wear a lot today and went to the supermarket and was hitching them up the whole time so I must've lost inches ----- yippee!!!!! Going to measure myself in the morning and keep an eye on that as well as the scales.
I still wanna see that scale go down!!! lol
Upped the Met dose last night and have been a bit ill today ergggh, can't wait til this stabilises!

I am not IR, but would like to lose about 6-7lbs. I've not been doing GI (I used to eat low-carb) because...after a brief break...my body now craves carbs with met. I've also noticed that my weight loss, since the initial loss when I first started, has plateaud.
Should I be doing low GI, even if I am not IR?
Will it help shift the lbs? I count kcals really carefully and exercise...but still seem stuck.
I also feel really sick not eating carbs (this nausea went, but has been back all week - been on met since mid Feb)
Any advice? I'll do anything to shift those lbs!
I also don't know if my snacks are low GI...like cereal bars? breakfast cereal etc.
Maybe just try eating as much non-processed food as possible, such as fresh fruit and veggies, lots of cereals are loaded with sugar as well so perhaps keep an eye on which ones you eat?? The best ones I've been told are All Bran, Kelloggs Komplete and oatmeal.
Are you drinking lots of water???

thanks for the response. I only eat porridge, cornflakes or weetabix cereal...with banana or berries, and low fat soya milk.
I drink approx 2litres of water a day - and eat lots of fruit. I used to eat approx 8 servings of veggies a day, but since met - veggies are making me feel sick :-(
I just don't know what else to do?! Though, tonight I was v.bad and had a burger - but boy, am I paying the met price now. Haven't eaten anything greasy for about a month...and now I know why.
But generally...this weight thing is getting me down. Just seem STUCK at a certain place!
God I'm so struggling with eating on Met, I have NO appetite. I manage to have my cereal for breakky and then I don't feel hungry at all until may 8pm. This is crazy, it's not helping me lose weight either. I think I will talk to the Nutritionist about this tomorrow.
Food just doesn't interest me at all!!

What type of exercise? How often, and for how long?
Hi Kat -
I tend to aerobic exercise, and do interval training on the treadmill. 10 mins running at speed 10.5, resistance 2, then 5 mins at speed 5.5, resistance 11.5, then another 10 mins of the running etc for about 30-45 mins. 3 times a week...
