I have been 'tentatively' diagnosed as having PCOS by my GP and have been given a referral to see an OB/GYN. At the time my GP asked me if i wanted to go public or private and i (foolishly) said public (i don't have private health insurance). So the referral was faxed off and i assume i now wait for them to write to me with a date? (probably in some crazily long amount of time). As i'm completely new to this specialist thing i'm wondering how long i can expect to wait before receiving any date for an appointment? It's been two weeks so far.
I suppose the other option could be to go back to the GP and ask for a private referral and pay to see a specialist much sooner? I think i'm impatient because right now i just want the diagnosis confirmed and to move forward with any necessary treatment.
I've got private insurance (which it sucks to pay but I am glad to have it) so I can't tell you a definite time frame. But if it's been 2 weeks, I would just give the Dr's rooms a call and ask. If they are an Oby and a Gyno it could take longer due to their workload.
Best of luck with everything and I would definitely call them.

My gp ran the tests and diagnosed me.
I went to see the head of gyno at my local hospital, 2 years ago when i first started to get symptoms, and it took ages to get in (public) to see him, and i just ended up with a d&c and then told, "sorry can't find whats wrong", here take a really high dose pill. So just kept on muddling along.
Two years later i found an excellent female dr, who spotted the problem in literally 5 mins and ran the appropriate tests.
So firstly i would make sure that you are happy with the gp you have chosen, because finding a really good one could save you both time and money.
I see an Ob/gyn privately. I don't have insurance cover until Feb 2010. My doctor didn't give me the option of public or private. I would have chosen private anyway because I feel you get a better level of care for these types of things, and get in quicker. It takes months to get in at public hospitals, and it can be a while between appointments. Private ob/gyns aren't that expensive once you get the medicare rebate

I was referred through public but after 6 months gave up and went private. Finally got the call from public after a year on the waiting list! This was Aug 08 - Aug 09. Definitely would recommend going privately. Good luck!
I would go private too....I went private when I saw my RE........are you wanting to TTC? If so, i think you would be better to see an RE (reproductive endoncrinologist)...thats their business ya know...helping people get pregnant... My RE prescribed spiro and changed my pill when I wasnt TTC..so they can do basically what a gyn can do......
I see you are in QLD...My friend went to see a specialist through the QLD public system and it wasnt too long..maybe a couple of months, so it might be different up there..I know here in NSW the waiting lists are very very long unforunately...
All the best hun!!

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still yet to hear anything about an appointment, i've seen on line that it's a 12 month waiting list to see an endocrinologist in my town/city so i'm sure the gyno will be on par with that!
In response to your question deb we're not TTC, but having said that we haven't used contraception for more than two years. I'm of the school of thought that if it happens, it happens, but i'm in no rush to go off and try fertility treatment. Unfortunately my GP doesn't quite understand this and referred me to the gyno saying i want to fall pregnant. This is probably why i'm yet to go back and ask for a private referral. All i really want is for my cycle to go back to semi normality (but trying to avoid going back on the pill).
