Default how low is "low carb" on Met?

just wondering what amoung of carbs you guys are having now that you're on Matformin.

i've read that doing the Atkins Induction doesn't work for some of you...so what is "low carb"? 50-100g ok? or less?
do you still have HIGH FAT or does the fact that you're having more carbs cancel-out the effects of upping the fats?

any help on this would be most appreciated....

I'm on met 1000mg/day and I don't really limit my carbs. I don't splurge most of the time and if I do have something a lil more sugary (cookies, for example) I'll make sure I have plenty of protein, to help with blood sugar levels.

I actually did atkins, while NOT on met (it made another issue worse) and I followed atkins to a T (20gr carbs/day during induction)...and after the first two weeks, I pretty much just stuck with the induction levels, because I was seeing such great results. I went from 215 to 180 (where I am now)...but I'm very muscular, so I dunno where else my body would take it from.

That said, if you significantly lower your carb intake, the met will not have any carbs to work with, as far as lowering/maintaining reasonable blood sugar levels. I don't know if it could really happen, but with lowering your blood sugar levels via diet (atkins, for example)...and then taking met....i wonder if you could make yourself hypoglycemic??? (just playing devil's advocate here...)

As far as the fat content with a high protein low carb diet (atkins)....fat isn't really an issue, but they say not to go overboard with it. I never really kept tract of my fat intake...only carbs and it worked for me. Also, my triglyceride and cholesterol levels went DOWN, even with the increase in dietary fats.

I hope I've been of some assistance here and maybe somebody else with more knowledge will have a better answer!!!

Dee,

I had my doctor refer me to a nutritionist and that was most helpful, she told me how many carbs to have and when to have them during the day based on my height/weight/test results. It was a very short, informative, one-time appointment. Good luck!

Im on 2000mgs Met and on my 6th day of Atkins' Induction. Let me tell you that the first 1-4 days have been shear hell with being so tired, mild headache, leg cramps, insomnia. Ya- sounds like fun eh? Ive done this before and the worse your symptoms of withdrawl, the worse you were before. Anyways, having said that, its day 6 and I feel fantastic. Im going to continue for the next 8 days as indicated by Dr.A and then moving up each week or so by 5 grm increments.
Im eating alot of veggies and really everything is pretty darn healthy in my eating. I think low carb lifestyles are ideal for PCOS, even with taking MET. You just have to find a suitable number for you. Perhaps MET amplified the withdrawl symtoms but that was only for about 4-5 days. So worth it!

thank for you answers ladies...i think i have a clearer picture and will try to stick to around 50-100g carbs per day.

one more question....can these carbs include fruit-carbs? can you eat laodsa fruit through the day as long as you stay within the carb-limit?
i work as a bus driver and it's kinda hard finding HOT carb-concious foods...i can't stand eating cold meats/eggs/veggies so i'm hoping to carry a ton of fruits with me and munch on them inbetween (or inplace of) meals....any input would be helpfull :p

so even if i'm ABOVE the 20g Carb Induction level, can i still have "high fats" or do i have to lower them too?

Yes I agree, 20 carbs is pretty low. I had to cut out exercise this week. However with this energy that I have now, Its back to the gym babeee and this week Im increasing them to 25-30. The point of the 20 is to get you into fat burning mode as Im trying to lose a little.
I think 50-100 carbs per day is a great start. Although frusits are high in simple sugars (fructose) which go stright to your blood-especially "loads", which promptly gives you an insulin spike, which is what we PCOS'ers are trying to avoid. Personally, i ould stick to 1-2 servings a day of fruits that are low on the glycemic index. Meaning, it take longer time for your body to absorb. Such as: strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries (berries are best), canteloupe, apples, cherries, grapefruit, plums.
Higher GI fruits are: anything dried, watermelon, pineapple, bananas (moderate GI).Cheers

My nutritionist told me to stay below 100g, but she doesn't want me to cut them out too much. My questin is that if I were to do the Atkins thing and stay around 20g a day, would that help make up for the fact that I can only exercise 3-4 times a week? Would it make the weight come off faster? Please help!
