Question How many herbs are too many?

I started taking some herbal remedies and I was wondering if anyone knows how much is TOO much?

I am taking:
EPO (regulate hormones)
Vitex (regulate hormones)
Saw Palmetto 180 mg 2x/daily(hair tamer)
Black cohosh (flashes)
Borage, fish, and flaxseed oil 1200mg
Calcium 500mg 2xdaily(mood regulator)
Multivit
B complex 25mg
Paxil (depression)

I currently have a bad cold and was thinking about echinecea, but thought maybe thats one to many. What do you think?

I don't think what you are taking is too much...as long as you can afford them then it's fine. One thing people have to remember about herbs is that they have strong medicinal properties so they should be seen as medecine...you use them only if you really need them. Many people just take a bunch of herbs because they've heard good things about them, but you wouldn't take a bunch of drugs just because you've heard good things about viagra or paxil would you? Well you have to apply the same logic to herbs...use only what you need and what applies to your condition. Concerning echinacea, it is indeed a very good herb for colds and flu but one thing I have noticed about it, is that it only seems to be effective when you take it at the very beginning of a cold...if you've already been sick for a couple of days, echinacea doesn't seem to work as well. There is one remedy that I tried the last time I got sick and it's called Oscillococcinum...it's a homeopathic remedy that you can find in most drug stores...for me, it works like a charm even better than echinacea. You might want to give it a try.

I don't think there's a 'too many' or 'too few' issue.

I do think that many people load up on herbs without thorough research, and without knowing exactly how they work and what their dosages should be.

Everything that I take has either been prescribed to me by my naturopath, or approved by her. So I feel safe in that, even though (at times) all the herbs/minerals/supplements feel like a meal unto themselves.

In general, if I am curious about trying a given herb (like I was about Chasteberry and St. John's Wort) I'll do my research and then discuss it with my Naturopath she then either gives me the okay or explains why it's not right for me.

It's important to talk to soemone who is very knowledgeable about the subject before going willy-nilly into the territory: herbs are medicine too, and few people would consider taking a pharmaceutical pill without having it prescribed for them.
