How much shedding is normal? I've heard 100 hairs a day- is this true? Every morning when I comb out my hair after a shower, 20-30 hairs come out. I don't know how many fall out in the shower or at other times. I haven't noticed clumps in the tub, and my hair isn't visibly thinning, but I guess I'm just trying to keep an eye on it. I don't want half my hair to be gone before I realize it, KWIM? I know I'm very paranoid...
How much shedding constitutes "hair loss"?

Beleive me what you say is WAY below average of someone losing NORMAL hair you have nothing to worry about .. I lose well over 250-300 hairs a day I am covered in them they are in my food, all over my jumper you could make a wig out of the hairs on my work chair at the end of the day .. you would also notice thinning (I would be forced to cut my hair shorter every six months or so due to the thinnenss of it)

I have noticed in the past few months my hair has been falling out alot more. I am sure its over 50 a day if not more. I have noticed that no matter how I part my hair I have a thick part line. It used to be thin. For the past couple of years everytime I get my hair cut and washed they something about how much I shed. At first I thought it was falling out because i got a bad perm. But now the perm is all gone and it seems to be falling out worse. I have a twin brother that shaves his head he has lost so much hair. We are 27.

Unfortunately, I don't think that tells you anything about whether you're losing hair. How many hairs did you used to find in your comb (years ago)? Does your hair clog the shower drain?
My experience was that for years and years now I've lost a fair amount of hair in the shower. I don't lose more than you do when combing it out, but my shower drains do clog all the time. Although even when I put a haircatcher over the drain, there are definitely fewer than 100 hairs lost. And yet I'm definitely losing hair. (I also never notice any hair left on my pillow, or more than a few strands on my clothing.) It's rather mysterious now that I think about it. It took years for me to notice that my hair was actually thinning. I had wondered why I lost so much more hair in the shower than other people seemed to (judging by my drain-clogging), but didn't really worry about it because it wasn't noticably thinner and I had no idea that PCOS can cause AGA, not that I had even been diagnosed with PCOS! I expect the thinning would have been obvious earlier if I hadn't had fairly thick hair to begin with. It's still not all that thin, but the diameter of my ponytail has gone down a great deal and my scalp burned when I went to Hawaii in July. I've also had miniaturization at my temples for years and years (which I didn't recognize either), but only recently has my hair loss accelerated such that my hairline has noticably receded.
So, your rate of shedding could be perfectly normal and no more than the replacement rate, or you could be losing your hair very slowly like I have. I do hope it's the former!
I also loose a lot of hair-well it seems a lot to me-me, dh and dd have it on our clothes, i'm cleaning out my brush every 2 or so days-stuff like that....when i wash my hair in one swipe w/ my hand i can have 10 strands - but i was told bacd about 5 yrs ago-it was probably from the BCP-but i haven't been on that for over 1 1/2 yrs- my hair is not noticably thinning-so i think w/ us who do not have that pcos "side effect" it might just be something from the pcos-

I have to agree with this staetment my hair was gradually thinning for fifteen years before I started freaking out and got a biobsy which showed androgen genetic alopecia I always assumed that ALL people lost the amount of hair i had !

I definitely keep a close eye on mine. Even before I was diagnosed, I was paranoid about hairloss because my grandma and my mom's half-sisters experienced significant loss. They don't have PCOS though. Just hairloss. My mom has great hair- thick as a rope. Still I've always worried about what my hair would do.
I don't notice any coming out in the shower, no clogs or anything. My part looks the same as far as I can tell. I know after I had the baby, I did lose some hair (which is normal post-partum). I now have some short regrowth at the front, like under my bangs. So that's a good sign.

That does sound like a good sign, if you're certain it's regrowth and not miniaturization.
If I were you, I would probably prophylactically use a shampoo that impairs DHT production, like Nizoral or Head & Shoulders. (Of those two, I think Head & Shoulders is by far the more cosmetically elegant shampoo, and isn't drying to the hair.) It might mitigate any problems that arise in the future, and it's easy enough to do, unless you have another shampoo that you really like.
What is miniaturization? How do I tell the difference?
"DHT causes male hair loss by shortening the growth, or anagen, phase of the hair cycle, causing miniaturization (decreased size) of the follicles, and producing progressively shorter, finer hairs. Eventually these hairs totally disappear."
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to tell the difference between miniaturized hair and regrowth. I suppose if the shorter hair is in areas where most of the hair had previously fallen out, it would be clear it was regrowth. Otherwise you might have to consult a hair loss specialist to find out (if they can even tell, I don't know).
if i remember correctly, in beauty school we were told that is is normal to lose 75-100 hairs per day, and it really isnt enough to notice, if it seems like alot of hair loss you may be losing more.

I know when I was younger I could only wrap a ponytailer twice around my hair. It goes 4 times now. Yeah, mine clogs the drain too. I have to clean it out a coulpe times a month. The vacuum cleaner too. I clean my hairbrush out everytime I use it pretty much. I think its way more than 100 hairs, although I've not counted them. They say male-pattern baldness is a symptom of PCOS, too. I guess the hairloss just goes along with that?
Since I went of BCP (we are talking 2 days here) my hair loss has gotten worse. I have a lot of hair so I shed quite a bit anyway but this morning when I washed my hair it was coming out in droves. Much more then normal.
