Default How much does Metformin interfere with the absorption of Folic Acid and B12?

I've read that Metformin interferes with the absorption of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12. Does anyone know how much Met interferes with that...and did your doctor suggest to take extra vitamins to make up for it? If so, how much?

Thank you!

My doc didn't seem to be aware of the Met/b12 connection, but he had already prescribed a folic acid/b12 supplement (for heart and anemia). While many docs do suggest b12 or calcium supplementation while on Met, there are too many that are unaware of the need for this. Here is some info you may find helpful:

Metformin© may interfere with calcium metabolism [35]. This may indirectly reduce vitamin B12 absorption because vitamin B12 absorption requires calcium [35]. Surveys suggest that from 10% to 30% of patients taking Metformin© have evidence of reduced vitamin B12 absorption [35].

In a study involving 21 subjects with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that 17 who were prescribed Metformin© experienced a decrease in vitamin B12 absorption. Researchers also found that supplementation with calcium carbonate (1200 milligrams per day) helped limit the effect of Metformin© on vitamin B12 absorption in these individuals [35].

Although these medications may interact with the absorption of vitamin B12, they are necessary to take for certain conditions. It is important to consult with a physician and registered dietitian to discuss the best way to maintain vitamin B12 status when taking these medications.

Oh okay, so it sounds like I should be taking a calcium supplement rather than the B12 then. I sure wish my doctor had told me that! Thank you so much for the information! I really appreciate it!!!

I just came accross this today.

You still need 25mg B6, 250mcg B12 and 2.3mg folic acid along with calcium and magnesium.

This could be the link for fybermyalga or other muscle disorder symptoms.
It is also a link in heart disease and even PMS symptoms.

Truly amaising how every cell in our bodies are linked and can be effected.

I have even been to a neurologist and they never suggested any vitamins.

Thank you so much for this information!!! It's upsetting that so many doctors don't know enough about PCOS and Met to let us know this!

My doctor was also unaware of this connection, and it worries me that we are more knowlegable! I take Calcium + Vitamin D supplement, along with a Centrum multivitamin, which contains folic acid, among other things. I think that covers all the bases... But this info is vital! Thanks for sharing!
