Hi,
I was wondering if you guys had any tips on what food to eat when taking Metformin.
In 2003 I lost 6 stones/38kg/84lbs whilst on a very low carb diet, since then I've had problems with Metformin and so gained back most of it. So now I'm back on the same diet.
Do you guys know of any good meals or food to eat when taking the Met, I'm struggling to find a good solid low carb meal that will still be enough substance to cover my Met.
I find if I only have some salad or meat the Metformin goes right through me and into the toilet, I get bad nausea like most of you guys have said also.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I have found soups to be easy on the tummy and filling (not cream based though). I made a bunch last weekend from scratch and froze them for dinners for the next month or two.
I had steak and salad (work dinner meeting) last night and I have to agree it doesn't stay with you very long!
Steamed veggies at lunch are good. Green Giant makes some called Simply Steam, they are 50 calories per serving or 100 calories per bag and are low carb, low sodium, and low in fat (even better than lean cuisine or healthy choice frozen meals). The other day I had a mixed steamed veggie and the roasted potato with snap peas and bell pepper. I was satisfied and it stayed with me (most important while at work).
I do a protein drinks in the morning that are 90 calories, no carbs, no fat, no sugar.
This plan really helps when I stick to it. I feel better and don'thave the icky side effects met is so famous for!

It was funny to me to see this when I logged on today. We had an office luncheon where we all brought something and of course, I absolutely gorged myself...BAD IDEA. At the moment, I feel so full and sick that I could just go to bed for days!!! And I'm traveling tonight - so that'll be fun for everyone!!

I don't follow any low carb diet or anything, but I find that I have to have some sort of carb/starch with my meal before the Met. I can't just have a salad. I have to have a salad with a piece of whole grain toast. Or a little bit of brown rice or whole wheat pasta. I can't just go veggies and meat and be fine. And it doesn't have to be a lot of it, just a small amount seems to work. Too much and it sometimes disagrees with me. I spent a good 2 months trying to figure things out.
Good luck!
