I've gone through 4 super plus tampons in 7 hours.
This is day one of AF's visit and I've NEVER had this much bleeding before. Previous to this, I've gone through 4 S.P. tampons over the course of a day, but never in such a short span of time.
Is this normal? I'm newly on metformin 1g in divided doses (i.e. 500mg in the morning and 500mg at dinner).
If this is what I'm to expect, then I'll probably have to go back to using pads... this isn't something that I'm too keen on, as I find tampons to be more convenient, however it's either that or buy new underwear every month because the leaking is such a nuisance
What about cramping? I seem to have more of that this time 'round than I remember.... it's just not uterine (ie in the tummy area)... the cramping's localized to the vaginal & anal opening (had to do a #2 this morning and I almost passed out from the pain!)... almost like I was giving birht or something like that (having never given birth before, I'm guessing that this is what it feels like)
Should I also be taking an iron supplement or something?
My OB always said if you go through the super plus tampons or the overnight pads in 2 hrs, GO TO THE ER ASAP!
I have never heard of that. I have had many, many periods where I went through a super plus in less than an hour throughout a day or two. It was always when I had gone a few months without having one. I always use a superplus and a pad. It is a lot, but do not think you have to go the ER.

My mother had the same problem. It ended up being her thyroid. She kept bleeding for about 2 weeks straight until the doctor gave her some pill to stop her period. I hope you went to the doctor just to get a check up. Listen to your instincts. If your worried, go to the doctor. Your body will always send signals to you when something is wrong. It's just a matter of listening.
I've also never heard the thing about the ER. In high school, I'd go a year or two without a period and when it came, it was horrible. For a while, o.b. made a tampon that was one level above super plus, they called it "ultra." For a solid week I bled through an "ultra" in an hour. (My period was a lot longer than that, but after the first week it went down to a super plus ever couple hours, which was a big improvement.)
I think you should take an iron supplement. It can't hurt.
How long ago was your last period?
