Question how much for XR?

Hi ladies,

Just curious how much you pay for a month's supply of Glucophage XR... How much does insurance cover, and how much do you have to foot?

Also, I caught a post that said the XR is now available in generic. When did that happen? Is the price substantially better?

I went and picked up a refill of the (brand name) Gluc XR today, and about choked. 48.94 for a month's supply, which for me is 90 of the 750 mg pills. For some reason a month goes by and I forget how much it costs.. And the pharmacist said nothing about the pills being available as generic.

It just seems to me that paying 50 bucks a month for Glucophage (in addition to my other meds) is not something I can do long-term. I know it could be much worse, but 50 dollars still seems pretty steep. I hate to think what it would be without insurance!

When I paid for the brand Gluc XR my copay was $40.00, now that it is generic, I pay a $10.00 copay for it and that is one month's fill of 120 500mg tablets for me. But that is just how it is with my insurance, I don't know how your's would be. It has only been out in generic for maybe 3 or 4 weeks so the price is not signigicantly different if you don't have insurance (I don't think). We just about go broke on prescription copays alone, I think we pay almost $150 dollars monthly on just my copays, not to mention my mom's who's copays are closer to $300 monthly.

With the glucophage XR I was paying 35 a month with my dh insurance... with my insurance (just got it a few months ago) I was paying 20 a month copay. Oh yeah that was 120 pills. Now with the generic (which I love I have no tummy trouble at all!) I pay 20 for a 3 month supply of the generic through my insurance. So that went from 420 a year w/dh insurance to 240 a year with mine. Now its 80 a year with the generic!!! I'm so excited... If I were you I would call the pharm. and ask them if they carry the generic Metformin ER... if they do ask them if your rx could be filled with that next time!!! I'm sure it will save you lots of money! If they dont carry the generic yet then call around and find one that does... and give your pharm. one last call right before your rx is suppose to be filled and ask again if they have the generic if not then switch pharm! Good luck!

Just curious...can you claim your meds on your major medical portion of your insurance? I do and get most of it back.

Thanks for the replies, ladies. I will definitely give the pharmacy a call to ask about the generic. I'm very happy to know it's out in generic, because that does mean the copay should only be $10 or so.

CryinginPA, claiming it under major medical probably isn't an option. The prescription plan w/ my insurance isn't really too bad, but the brand-name drugs (especially the already-expensive extended release formulations) have a bigger copay.

You may want to check with your HR representative at work, but I believe you can use medical flexible spending accounts for co-pays. Sure, you still pay the full price of the co-pays, but the money is deducted from your paycheck before taxes so you'll still be saving a considerable sum over the coarse of the year.

I'm still on regular met and am going to try to get switched to the ER version. I work for a major mail-order pharmacy so I have an awesome pharmacy plan, but I'm not sure if the ER version is being added to my specific formulary for 2004. I need to check and if it is, I will be getting it.
