You definitely need to call your doctor and find out what testing schedule she wants you to follow. However, until you do it is a good guideline to always test first thing in the morning before you eat anything. Do that every morning, and record the results in a log or on a piece of paper somewhere. Then you may also want to check a few times a week right before your evening meal.
There are many other times you could test depending on what kind of information you and/or your doctor are trying to gather. It is often helpful, especially in the beginning, to test an hour or two after a meal to see how your blood sugars have responded to what you just ate. This can help you to realize why you can only tolerate one cup of pasta now instead of your usual three cups, for example.
But without any specific direction from your doctor, there's just no way of knowing exactly when you should be testing. Give her a call, or ask her on your next checkup, and in the meantime check those two times I recommended. I hope you have good success in getting your blood sugars under control.
