My Mood: Points: 1,734.68 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,734.68 | I was diagnosed when I was 16 years old. That was 17 years ago. I remember being really upset and had a tough time with it. I fought going to doctors, when my mom took me, I refused to get undressed and allow anyone to touch me. Finally, my mom took me to a doctor who took time to talk to me. She talked to just me for a long time. I finally was comfortable enough to go through with the exams and ultrasounds.. I was also put on BCPs at a young age. I struggled with it a lot, but it is a blessing that you were diagnosed so young. And now a days, there is a wealth of information and an amazing support group. Feel free to ask questions! We are here for you sister! |

Points: 179.36 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 179.36 | I had a wonderful internal med doctor who suspected I had it when I was about 17 due to never having had a regular cycle...I averaged 3 cycles a year and went a year without AF at all. However at the time (15 years ago) the criteria for diagnosing PCOS was different. I had no problems getting pregnant with DD#1 (I was 28 and got preg on the first try, but I also had lost 70 lbs after being overweight from my teens until 26). When trying to get pregnant with #2 it was taking awhile and I was finally officially dx with PCOS after an ultrasound and blood work showing high testosterone. I was 30. It was not shocking to me nor hard to deal with. Maybe because I already had a child? I'm not sure. It's more of an annoyance for me because I don't like being dependent on medication. We are TTC #3 and I just hate having to go through all this again...ugh |

Points: 248.70 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 248.70 | I was diagnosed at 21. However, like most of you I started showing signs at around 16 years old, my doctor at the time told me that "every woman is different" and she started me on my first birth control pill. Years later, my dermatologist was asking me about the dark patches of skin on my neck and under my arm pits, he also inquired about my periods. He was the first to ever mention PCOS, all the other doctors thought I just had irrelgular periods and depression. Boy were they surprise when my blood work came back. Not only did I have PCOS, I also had insulin resistance and hypo-thyroidism. I take each day at a time, for every day is a struggle. I'm happy to find a place like this to talk to other women like myself, its comforting to know that I'm not alone in any of this.

My Mood: Points: 1,471.12 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,471.12 | The official diagnosis came at 22 (this past spring break actually) but the doctor told me what she suspected last summer at 21 and I remember being quite depressed and wondering why. But it does get better- now I just take it as a challenge and am quite glad to know because I can ward off the usual related diseases that come with PCOS. |

Many doctors downplayed my concerns and overlooked my symptoms. Each day is different... it feels like a never ending rollercoaster ride that I don't want to be on . |

hey, i know this may seem a wierd question, but how old were you all when you were diagnosed PCOS? and do you think you have come to terms with it better with age?
| I answered the age part like everyone else, but noticed you also wanted to know if we've come to terms better wiith it with age... well, I didn't find out until AFTER I got married and was ttc. In some ways I'm glad that I didn't find out sooner. I have a mild form and am thin so no real outward signs of it. But it does effect my fertility. Had I found out sooner, I may have been fearful in starting relationships and thinking about having children. I'm not sure how I would have handled all that. Sometimes ignorance can be bliss! However, just know that not all women with PCOS have trouble conceiving and there are lots of options even if you do have trouble. Try not to let that effect how you plan the rest of your life. It can be distressing no matter what your age at first... its so confusing, but you'll find ways to deal with any symptoms you may have and live your life. Good luck! |

Points: 6,686.87 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 6,686.87 | i was diagnosed around 14 or 15 and thought it was the end of the world. i stayed depressed and would fake sick just so i wouldnt have to go to school and get made fun of for being overweight. now i'm exactly the opposite. i've matured alot and very accepting and loving of myself and have a high self esteem, even thought i am still extremely overweight. i think being older the maturity part helps out alot. and the matuirty of other people. you realize making fun of someone isn't "funny" and "cool" although there still can be a few pricks.. nothing like middle school and early highschool |
