It's so horrifying that insurance companies can deny you for private insurance based on PCOS. I'm lucky we have coverage through my husband's job now, but I'll probably be self-employed and afraid of ever losing that.

I finally got BC/BS to cover my scripts for PCOS. It took a few months and me finally getting mean with a claims person of theirs but I now have yaz covered for a year. Saved me 40 bucks a month. Its a battle but it can be won .. eventually.

I am currently going through the request for reassessment with kaiser becasue of being denied. Can't say i am too encouraged reading this thread. I am really missing the health care system of Canada. We just recently moved from Canada to California. Sigh...

I'll paste in my request letter. I don't know if it will do any good though....

Dear Kaiser Permanente,

I would like to request a reassessment of my application.

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in 2003 and put on Metformin 500mg x 3 a day to prevent the condition from getting worse. It is my opinion that I could be a candidate for being insured by you because I am very proactive in the treatment of this syndrome. Kaiser Permanente markets itself on being an advocate for preventive care. That is exactly what I am doing. I do not have high blood sugar. I do not have high blood pressure. I do not have high cholesterol. I am not over weight. My risk factors are much lower because of my healthy lifestyle. I am simply on Metformin as a preventative action. I have been told by my doctors that by taking Metformin I am preventing cysts from growing. I have been symptom free now for almost 3 years. I also have two beautiful, healthy sons so my fertility issues have been solved.

I am including a letter from Dr. Voss to confirm that I am symptom free.

Would it help if I pay for the medication myself? If I apply for a plan that does not include prescriptions?

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

You'd think with all my other "risk factors" so low that I could be a candidate.

We'll see.

Working on getting to my "ideal" weight. Approach: no sugar and weight training. Right now the symptoms of PCOS are being managed by 1500mg of Metformin and Seasonique birth control. My acne is gone (Praise God!) and I feel great as long as I stay away from sugar and dairy (darn metformin).

I'll tell you what... talk to your Dr.... make sure that the names of any DX are not in your file if they can help it...

Apply for insurance through companies that don't pull medical records...

We are in a sad state of offers....

My insurance has yet to deny anything, but I am not 100% positive on how it is being billed. Then again, I am not really complaining.

I was denied private insurance in three states because of PCOS. My weight was less than the statistical US average for a woman, not an unhealthy BMI. I was on no medications. I had never had any "true" fertility treatments. I wrote letter after letter about how I would gladly exclude coverage for PCOS if only they could cover "flu and falls." Still got DE-nied.

So we lost everything we owned to pay the COBRA. Finally DH got a minimum wage state job and we got group insurance.

That pre-existing sucks!!!

I think in some states where you have to have insurance they can't deny you. When I got health insurance I wasn't asked any questions, not even if I smoked.

I'm in CA and have the same insur for the last 13 years -blue cross. Dr. mentioned i have symptoms of pcos but not sure if it was diganosed. I've only have taken BC and no other meds. I'm now worried because i do have highblood pressure too. DH and i just got married and his insurance will be much cheaper than mine. His open enrollment isnt until July so i will wait since i have our dd on my insur and he cant add her until July . Now i'm worried if they will deny me. He plans switching companies and will get new insur and i'd hate to be denied then too. Do i need to be worried he also has Blue cross. We are aslo planning TTC this month so do i stay on my insur and just transfer my dd and any futuer kids?????

I was diagnosed with elevated insulin hyperinsulinaemia in April 2007. At that time I was on my husband's group insurance. New job here in Atlanta the group insurance is $800 PER MONTH. So we applied for individual. I can't get it because of the diagnosis. They know I have it because they ask if you're on medication. I take Metformin. Until today I hadn't seen a doctor since my husband lost his job right before Christmas in 2007. Finally went to an endo today because my scrip for Met has expired. Had to pay cash for the visit $250, but at least they let me make payment arrangements for the labs which were $600. I'm so incredibly bummed because since we moved here I haven't been able to find a job.
