Unhappy how soon does ovulation occur after taking clomid

I was diagnosed about a year ago but have not really had any treatment. My gynecologist is not very familiar with PCOS and has really been no help at all. I have been prescribed medroxy to bring on a period and clomid 50 mg on days 4-8 for ovulation. My doctor has not really given me any info, so I pretty much go by what I read on the net. I get so frustrated sometimes that I just feel like sitting here and crying. I know that is not the way to deal with it though and I try to be strong. Any info about clomid and just PCOS in general would be a great help. What I really want to know is when taking clomid when can i expect ovulation to occur and is it after taking the whole 5 days or after your first pill. Other than that please let me know some important facts about PCOS and any other kind of medications I can be taking. I have heard some things about metformin but my doctor said that he would rather not do that until he sees how the clomid works. I've heard that taking metformin can help with most of the symptoms I have (excessive hair all over my body, darkening of the skin, skin tags, acne, excessive weight gain, amenorrhea, infertility) but he says that he would rather not give it to me just yet. Also when I asked questions about what I can do about my symptoms he said that he couldn't help me with any of it except they trying to concieve part. My gp was worst, he actually asked me to remind him what PCOS was. LOL. I feel helpless and alone. I live in a fairly small town and I have nowhere to turn to for help with this. INFORMATION PLEASE

THANKS TO ALL

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience, I would def look for another doctor if I were in your shoes. Is there a bigger town near by that you can go to for a more experienced doc? Your doc should monitor you very closely on Clomid IMO.

I took my first round of Clomid CD 5-9 and went back to the doc CD 14 & he saw follies. I got the trigger shot & I ovulated on Day 16. So I ovulated 6 days after taking the last pill, but everyone is different & I've heard about many women ovulating much later when taking Clomid. Now I'm in the dreaded 2ww.

Keep your chin up, we're all in the same boat. Good luck to you & keep us posted on what happens.

I think you should get a more educated doctor if that's possible. Also, don't be afraid to ask them questions. Remember, you are paying them.

With Clomid you are supposed to Ov 5-10 days after the last pill, but some woman Ov later. Some don't Ov at all. That's why monitoring of some sort is beneficial. Even just a progesterone draw at CD21 to check for Ov is preferable to no monitoring at all. BD every other day if possible, just in case you do Ov... so you won't miss it.

My doc's, even my RE, didn't want to put me on Metformin until I tried taking Clomid up to 150mg... I convinced them to put me on it at 100mg though. And it helped, but I had to stop taking it because of my liver. You have to keep an eye on your liver while you're on it. I honestly believe Metformin helps a lot, but doctor's are weary of prescribing it when they're not well informed about it.

I always O'd late on clomid...cd24 to be exact. You should definetely be monitored. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself and to demand what you need. I have learned the hard way through this process that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Kristin

I'm on my first round too. Mine didnt give me to much info either. Take it days 5-9 and come in on day 21 for progestine (sp) check. in the meantime start using ovulation tests. I have a clearblue fertility monitor I'm using. Today is day 12 and its in the high zone. So I need to get him before he goes to work tonight. If I don't get prego on this round I'm wondering is he going to up it.

I never got any info from my RE either. If I didn't ask, I never got an answer. It's hard to come up with all the questions when you are there, so I learned most of what I know from this site and countless hours of researching online.

As far as your question, I agree, many ovulate later on clomid. First clomid cycle I ovulated naturally with two mature follies on cd26. Second cycle I ovulated from a trigger shot which I got on cd18 with one mature follie so ovulated on cd20. Third cycle I didn't ovulate at all.

Good luck to you!

Hi Shelly,

I just wanted to share my expirience to help inspire you. I was diagnosed in 2000 and did not treat it nor really cared until I increased in wt. Tried Actos, Metaphormin (helps your cells respond to your natural hormones), Sprionolactone(to stop hirtuisim/hair growth and male pattern balding) and dieting. I hated the s/e so I stopped them altogether. I did lots of research and found that there are few doctors who care enough about their patients to learn about PCOS.

I live in Northern, NJ and traveled all the ways to South Jersey, PA, NY in search for a versed, reproductive endocrinologist, OBGYN (that has cont school for Endocrine), or GYN - Endocrinologist. I consider myself responsible for my health, not the Doc's. It's paying off!!! I found a group that are experts in the PCOS RE!!! They are very nurturing and are willing to do almost anything to make you feel comfortable (from asking quest, to helpful reminders, follow-up calls etc)....

You will be paying a great deal of $$ and you should how your spending it. Are you getting your $$ WORTH?!!! Exploring with clomid (given PCOS, health etc) its not worth it, if you are not allowing yourself the best possible chance at conception. First you feel you trust your Doc, he should be familiar w/ your condition and should be monitoring your every step until conception (if he is a good one).

So use the internet, friends, ask your OBGYN to recommend a specialist in PCOS (he is obligated to your health, not helping is against the law!), Look for the closest Reproductive Endocrinologist. Hope this helps!

Well, good luck to you!

I have a long cycle and I'm even confused myself on when I ovulated last month but I know my dr had me come in on CD14, I took clomid CD 3-7, and I had two follicles that were mature. He told me to have sex for the next 2 weeks following that appointment everyday and keep trying. I did as he told me but I still believe I ovulated even later than he predicted. I have about a 33 day cycle period so here I am on cycle 2 of 100 mg clomid and keeping fingers crossed. I agree with all the above, if you can, try to find a new doctor in a different town close to you maybe.

one of the biggest things i can tell you to do is to go onto the GI diet. it really helps with the PCOS and so does the Metaformin. also if you can exercise as well that helps. take it from someone who tried for 5 yrs to get prego did but unfortunley had a miscarriage earlier this yr. she was a beauitful baby girl. she was our mircale baby i was told when i was 19 that i'd never have kids on my own unless i did IVF. don't listen to them. hard work and patience is key. i found out that i had pcos when i was 19 and no dr ever told me to change my diet and exercise just to take pills. and like they say if you have questions ask. there's no harm in asking. in someways your making you dr do his job better by having to do research on a disease he's never really dealt with. i hope this helps

Thumbs up To shell77

I would deffinately get another opinion from a different doctor. I would hate to see your PCOS go untreated when it could be something as easy as prescribing you a medication like metformin. I have all the same symptoms as you described and my doctor immediately prescribed me metformin 500 mg a day. My doctor is very familiar with PCOS and the problems that it causes and I was told that Clomid would only be used as a last resort as Clomid is only helpful in treating infertility and ovulation, but not the other sysmtons that you have. The weight gain, hair growth, skin tags, and darkened skin spots is a sign that your body is insulin resistant (just like me) and the metformin will help treat all of that! After about 2 weeks of treatment my hair growth is still there but not growing nearly as fast as before, also Ive lost about 3 pounds and the dark patches are getting much lighter! Im also getting my period and ovulating like I should! If your doctor will not help you I would recommend seeing a different gynecologist and perhaps they will refer you to an endocronologist (hormone and genetics specialist). Hope this helps!!
