Default How to tell if Metformin is working...?

I was diagnosed with PCOS 4/26/07. Endo gave me an Rx for 1500mg of Metformin/day which I started the very next evening 4/27/07. She told me about the possible side effects, gas and stomach troubles so she said to work up to 3 pills/day gradually. I did have these side effects at first...when I first got up to 3 pills/day it made me feel quite nausous and yucky. Anyway, I had to bump back down to 2/day breifly but then finally got up to 3/day without troubles.

I am kind of worried that since I'm not having side effects anymore that it isn't working? Or does it simply mean that my body is accepting it now? No sign of AF yet...none at all. I don't recall exactly when I got up to 3/day for good but I don't think it has been longer than 3 weeks or so at full dose...maybe it just takes longer than that at full dose to get the effect?

Sorry if this seems silly to worry about now...just getting anxious I suppose.

I think the best way to see if the Met is working is to get your blood re-checked. It really depends on why you were put on it-- for IR or to lower testosterone or another reason?

I was put on Met to lower my testosterone. It did work, but not as much as the endo wanted-- and that's why they added Spiro to my list of meds.

Good luck to you! You may have to wait a bit for the Met to reach its potential.

I actually do not recall exactly why she chose to put me on Met...I should probably call her for a recap and to ask some more questions.

My next appointment with her is at the end of July. She seemed to think I'd be pregnant by then but if not she said we would figure out why not.

I guess for now I just need to hang in there. Thanks!

It never brought on a period for me but it did help to lower my lab levels insulin etc. So even though you may not "see" results it could be working.

Yeah, I am hoping it helps me to have a period. I guess it is probably a bit too soon to tell at this stage though.

I will be seeing my Endo again at the end of next month...I will find out officially then if she thinks it is working or not.

Thanks everybody!
