Had some bloodwork done this week to check that out. Does Metformin make you feel "twitchy" or have any adverse side effects? I only ask b/c we're starting with Clomid, but if that doesn't work my RE said we might throw some Met into the mix before moving to shots. The whole drug thing kind of freaks me out - I hate to even take Advil - but clearly I am in need of some Rx intervention. |

Nikiep - I carry a little tuck of fat in my mid section. The rest of my body is pretty trim. I just wish the little fat I do have could be better distributed.

I do know that some women experience loose bowels (like can hardly make it to the bathroom kind). I started slow at 250 mg a day and now I am up to 1000mg a day. I really noticed a difference in my waist after taking met. I did do blood work for IR but it came back fine. I have read in other places that some test are inaccurate and that all PCO women have some type of IR.

This can be a pain, but i'm sure, someday, it will be a good thing. I don't know what the cut off would be either. I just know we all suffer from the same yucky syndrome and we are all strong. Points: 3,890.39 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,890.39 | i am a think PCOSer and have had 1 dr tell me I am not PCOS (even though I SO am) and another fam dr say I would have never thought it by looking at you...
I am 5'6" and around 134...was 125 when I conceived DS in 2002 (clomid kid). I am not IR nor am I on met....my RE doesn't feel it is as beneficial as once thought. I never had cycles on my own really...even when I was under 100 lbs in highschool and around 110 in college.
Currently on inj for ttc #2.
As a side note, the RE fellow (I am at a teaching hospital) said that many women in Europe with PCOS are slimmer. It seems to be here in America that many drs associate it with overweight women.

I was assuming I am lucky to not have the insulin resistance.

My Mood: Points: 833.46 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 833.46 | My primary care doc laughed when I told him my gyno said I was at risk for insulin resistance. He said I would only have to worry if I was, like, 100 lbs heavier. I hear that a lot- that regular docs don't take pcos seriously with skinny gals. Maybe they haven't had much experience with us. Have you found this?

My Mood: Points: 9,613.63 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 9,613.63 | I'm 5'8" and 143lbs. I could lose about 5lbs or so from around my middle, but...I think I still fit into the thincyster category. I used to be so thin as a teen and that's why they thought I never got my period. They did dozens of thyroid tests over the years too. I've been told many times you would never know I have PCOS.
I think and hope doctors are starting to see PCOS effects thin women too. It seems that more research is being done on it, especially in regards to fertility. My RE at Hopkins was saying one theory is that all women have an underlying IR or thyroid issue, but in some women it is undetectable.
I'm trying soooo hard to exercise and moderate my carbs, not for weight, but to help with my fertility issues.

i am not dx with IR but take metformin. i think he medical community is chasing their tails when it comes to pcos. metformin may be a step in the right direction, but progress had been too slow. i know since i started taking levoxyl for a slight thyroid issue i have noticed a marked difference in my testosterone levels.

Points: 1,028.84 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,028.84 | Very disappointed! I went to an reproductive endo today and the nurse really doubts that I have PCOS. She thinks I am too thin and that is the problem. Yes, I am 5'9 and 120lbs but I have eaten what I have wanted most of my life. They want me to eat more and stop the low carb diet. I think they think I have some kind of eating disorder. Like thin people cannot have PCOS. I have been through this before. Prior to doing shots a different endo told me to eat everything in sight. I did but only gained weight in my middle and it wasn't pretty. Since that Dr. I went to a OBGY who DX me with PCOS as I had 20 follicles on each ovary. After over a year of Follistim and no ovulation, we tried met and collmid. No luck ovulating still. I really want to increase my met to 1500mg but it is hard when people don't believe your DX. I do not show to be IR but as others had said that doesn't mean much. I am going to go with my gut. I am trying to get a appt with the actual Dr. Wish me luck!!! Second and third opinions are sometimes what we need.

But in my early 20's I weighed 110 lbs or less and I am 5'5. I had two different doctors attempt to have me hospitalized for eating disorders. Good thing they contacted my mother and she set them striaght.

I've always been pretty thin though--at my heaviest I was 132, but that came right off once I started the Metformin. I was at 119 when I was about 20 (I'm now 28) and was exercising a lot more than I am now, so I'm not too worried about how thin I am, since I was thin before, and it didn't cause any problems. Just before Christmas I wasn't able to get over 116, and that freaked me out, but luckily I've been able to keep it around 120 since then.
