Default Hey

I'm new here (posted a couple of times, just mainly here for research).
I'm 5'2" (a shorty!) and 110. BMI is low, I know, but I've always been tiny. You should see my brother (he's a sprinter).

Anyway, I'm not sure I actually have PCOS. I was diagnosed June 2007, and my OB/GYN just put me on birth control. That's why I'm here, doing research. I'm a pre-med student, so I'm okay with the terminology and basic hormones, but some of it just doesn't line up --> insulin resistance? I don't have weight problems. Never have! But a genetic predisposition for diabetes type II does run in the family.

Any tips on how to talk to my OB/GYN this May when I go in for more BW?

Default Questions for Dr.

[qoute) Any tips on how to talk to my OB/GYN this May when I go in for more BW?[/quote]

I am tiny too at 5'9 and 120lbs. I don't test positive for IR but do have mild acne, some mid region weight gain, mild hair loss, and cysts due to no ovulation. Metformin seams to clear all of this up for me (we will see about no ovulation). I think we are all surprised that we don't have to be a large women to have PCO. I guess you could ask your Dr. if he/she sees many cases like yours.

jenerator--the thing with PCOS is that it is a bunch of symptoms, not any set list of issues someone has to have to say they have it. You don't even need to have cysts on your ovaries to have it (I read your newbie post, so I'm assuming that's why your dr didn't do an ultrasound). I was diagnosed in 6/06 and didn't have an ultrasound until I was trying to conceive over a year later.

For me, personally, I don't have weight issues, I don't have acne, don't have IR as far as I know, don't have skin tags, etc. Basically, my issues are maybe a little hairy, but nothing that needs to be removed, no periods and funky bloodwork (oh, and cysts on my ovaries )

Some doctors like BCPs for PCOS, especially if the patient isn't trying to get pregnant. Some patients like them too, others think that it's just a mask to the problem and doesn't really help them. Personally, BCPs work well for me and it doesn't bother me if they are just a mask. I liked them because I always knew when I was going to get my period and just didn't have to worry about it. So if my doctor prescribed them to me, then I'd be fine with it. There are other ways of trying to manage PCOS, like diet, exercise, and a variety of meds or 'alternative' ways. Metformin is a frequently used drug for PCOS--it helps with insulin production. I was on it for a year and I don't think it worked for me, but I also think it's because I didn't have IR issues. But it works for a lot of people. Since there are so many different aspects to PCOS, there are a lot of different ways to try and treat it, and it's almost like no treatment is the same for different people. You just have to figure out what works for you.

Default Thin Cyster?

I'm 163 cm (about 5'3") and I weigh 128 pounds. I'm not thin, but I don't think that I am considered to be overweight. I'd like to lose about 15 pounds, though.

I'm 4'9" and probably around 100lbs. I don't have a scale so I'm not sure, but I'm at the heaviest I've been so far and I hate it. I need one though, but last time I looked at them I got too self-conscious and left the store without one.

I probably should be around 85-90. I used to have a pretty good metabolism as a teen but it just stopped suddenly around 19 and I gained a lot of weight that year. Not long after that at 20 I had really bad gallstones and had my gallbladder out.

I want to start the South Beach diet, but it's hard to stick with diets, especially since I love carbs. But I want to start now before this problem gets any worse.

Hi girls, I am new here, just wanted to say hello.... I am definitively a thin cyster...
am 5'4, 105 pounds. I eat healthy but need to eat a lot otherwise my energy goes down quickly... do you think this is somehow related to PCOS?? Being hairy and thin is no fun.

Welcome Rosita! I only notice my energy levels go down after I have eaten too many carbs. Just curious is you eat complex carbs?
