After I wean my son, I hope to return to my pre-preg weight. For exercise, I do a 20 minute run 3-4 times a week, and an hour-long group weight lifting class at the gym twice a week. I don't follow a specific diet, but I think my habits are pretty good. I enjoy fruits and veggies, and drink lots of water. I've tried to cut back on sweets. |

I'm new here and all e-mails are welcome. I'm still looking for a support system and haven't met too many here yet, but look forward to knowing people who understand.

I was first DXed wth PCOS about 3 years ago based on a hormone assay, but for various reasons was never able to get a pelvic US to check for actual cysts.
Now my new doc is a bit dubious about the reliability of the old diagnosis, so I'm honestly not sure if I have PCOS or something else.
I have mild hirsutism, acanthosis nigricans, and chronic amenorrhea (over a year and counting since my LMP, but I'm not IR, so who the heck knows.
;-p
Anyway, I'm 6'1" and my weight ranges from 130 (when I am very, very ill. I have occasional bouts of something like IBS) to 160 when I'm trying REALLY hard to gain weight and making myself almost as sick in the process. My "default" weight seems to be around 150.
I consider this to be unpleasantly thin. I feel bony and bruise easily. But it's not worth the way I feel if I try to "bulk up" either.
I'm very fortunate in having conceived and borne to lovely daughters. One was a pill baby and the other conceived about a week after removing a Mirena IUD. I suspect that the BC had some effect on my being able to conceive in those cases, but since the birth of #2, I can't seem to take hormonal BC without suffering unacceptable side effects.
Maybe it's just stupid trying to conceive with all the problems my body seems to have <shrug>.
Anyway, I was delighted to find that there's actually a FORUM for skinny cysters! I seriously thought I must be the only one out here! <LOL!> |

I'm not Dana, but you asked about gaining weight.
I didn't realize until my most recent Dr. visit (no scale at home) that I have actually gained a few pounds lately.
Last time I talked to the doc about this, he recommended that I find one good "comfort food" that I could make into a habit. Something that I'd enjoy and have pleasant associations with instead of choking down a carb-shake every day or something awful.
I picked two ;-p Lasagna and Tapioca.
I make a lasagna on monday, and eat some of that whenever I want a snack, in addition to regular meals, throughout the week (and oh, baby, is that a lasagna! I skimp on nothing!) and I have a full batch (like 4 servings) of tapoica pudding as a bedtime snack every night.
This is on top of a regular dietician-approved sort of "healthy diet".
It adds approximately one buttload of extra calories, and I didn't think it was doing a bit of good, but according to the scale, *something* is helping.
And I'm not feeling like I'm having to force feed myself anything horrible.
I had to use a powdered supplement to halt weight loss during my second pregnancy, and it was *vile*. I really wanted to stick with real food somehow, but getting enough of it in me was proving to be a challenge. And I eat large portions "for a girl" anyway ;-> It just gets burned up somehow.
So your own personal "favorite foods" might be way different, but I have found that making it the same routine food really helps because I'm not always trying to *figure out* what I'm going to eat this time. And picking foods that I love helps because I don't just "forget" to eat something because it's so nasty ;-p
My doc has another patient (he just told me about her today! There's two of us in this town! Wow!) who is gaining by chowing down on apple cinnamon muffins whenever she wants to (she works at a muffin shop, which helps ;-p).
Just thoughts...
What have you tried?

I am 5'7 130 lbs. I am trying the low carb ( refined and sugar) It is hard and I've fallen off the wagon many times. I love sweets. I don't know how to "quote" someone but - Kis95 you've inspired me to try harder on the low carb! Sometimes I think is it even for me? but hey it's worth trying.
I also teach aerobics and am a personal trainer. So exercise is built into my life. I actually thought the frequent exercise was the cause of my lack of AF. But an untrasound saw cysts - so Im a thin cyster! |

I am ttc, and very frustrated. Currently on 2000mg metformin and flax seed oil and fish oil. has anyone tried that and been successful? I'm think i want to take clomid, but my RE seemed hesitant.

jen - i have to preface this by saying that i don't know your medical situation as i am obviously not your (or anyone's! ) doctor - but if you are serious about ttc, don't want to wait forever and do not ovulate regularly on your own, you're going to need to get going on some meds. in my opinion, the natural route is great if you o on your own, but if not, seek help to do so. i personally, if left unmedicated, will ovulate MAYBE 1x/year, which is entirely unacceptable. hence, the drugs to get more ovulation happening. if i o'd 10x a year it would be a different story. why doesn't your re want to try clomid? did you have the full work-up? |

I don't do any special dieting. I've been on glucophage off and on for most of the past four years, because my RE insists on it, but I never found that it regulated my cycles, or anything else. Also, I have no other symptoms except the irregular cycles, and thus messed up hormones.

My Mood: Points: 2,069.88 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,069.88 | Hi Skinny Cysters!
Glad to have found you! I have been on the boards for months but never noticed this section.
I am 5’7” and as of about an hour ago 124 lbs. That’s the last time I stepped on the scale! I used to be lots thinner, ~113 lbs, but started gaining weight about a year or so ago. I think that is just from getting older and my metabolism slowing and not from PCOS!
Anyway, I had a difficult time “proving” my insulin resistance due to being thin. My first RE said that I didn’t “look” insulin resistant and absolutely refused to put me on Metformin. When I finally switched RE’s my new RE put me on Met straight away. After four months of no AF, I started to ovulate and get AF (42 day cycles) consistently just from the Met alone.
As for my b/w from this cycle, my E2 = 22, FSH = 4.6 and LH = 12.7. I still have that elevated LH/FSH ratio, but overall I am told these numbers are really good.
I try to stick to a south beach like diet. My body prefers low fat to low carb in terms of weight loss, but now that I know I am insulin resistant I am trying to work with that. I do love wine though, so I let myself have 1-2 glasses a week. My RE said that was ok (as long as I am not in a 2WW of course!)
I know two other thin cysters from work, btw. One is SUPER skinny, like 5’8” and maybe 110 lbs. The other is more like me. Anyway they BOTH got pregnant last fall and recently had little boys. One got pregnant naturally, her first cycle off the pill, and the other did IVF. So there are some thin-cyster success stories for you if you are TTC. Jennifer: Congrats on the twins!!! Did you do PGD on your embryo’s? Why did you wait until day 5 for your transfer? Just curious b/c I am doing IVF next cycle so any advice you have I would appreciate. Thanks!
Anyway, looking forward to chatting with you ladies!
Cheers,
jessie

But I have not been very good lately. As a side note, before I went on Metformin, I had more of a pear shape, only gaining weight around my hips. After the Met (2 years I think now), I haved gained weight around my middle, which I find interesting. Not complaining though, at least I get my period now! |
