She went in to have the abnormal spots on her cervix basically frozen, I think.. not sure if that is a colposcopy... but years later, she went on to have a little boy, who's 4 now and had no ill effects from either the HPV or the dysplasia and subsequent treatment. Points: 489.22 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 489.22 | there are a few different types of HPV some give warts some just cervical displaysia. if you are of the latter group you may be offered the LEEP procedure, freezing, or as in my case my doctor/ nurses said if you up your folic acid intake considerably sometimes you body will just reabsorb the displaysia. you will need to have pap every 6 month so make sure it dosen't return but to me it was worth it b/c I have all of my cervix minus the bit they took for the colposcomy (which is the biopsy).
Do what's best for you |

From what my doctor told me, there really isn't any risk in regard to pregnancy at this time. Unless I required more significant surgery to my cervix (I only needed the biopsies, nothing else), it shouldn't impact my ability to carry a baby.
Good luck, and please let us know what comes back on your results.

My Mood: Points: 2,686.17 Bank: 19,133.96 Total Points: 21,820.12 | I had cervical dysplasia due to HPV. I had a colposcopy/biopsy and a LEEP in 2006. I have been having pap smears every 6 months since. I had one abnormal pap since then (in April 2008). I had another colposcopy/biopsy at that time. My doctor said that everything is fine, and I am also no longer testing positive for HPV. She also said that none of this is going to affect my ability to concieve/carry a baby. HTH

Points: 0 Bank: 0 Total Points: 0 | HI Asherlexie,
I also have HPV and have had 2 LEEP procedures done. Personally I thought the colposcopy hurt a bit more. I had this all done about 10 years ago and was also concerned with conceiving, however I did conceive successfully in Jan 2005 and have a DS that is almost 3 now. I had a wonderful OB that listened to all of my cervical drama and she kept a VERY close eye on my cervix the entire pregnancy. It meant that I had a ton of vaginal ultrasounds while I was pg to check for cervical competence, but they were all fine. So I would say that you will be fine! | |

My Mood: Points: 759.23 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 759.23 | I had cervical dysplasia diagnosed during the first dr appointment when got pregnant with my son. Decided not to treat until after he was born, just did colposcopy and regular paps during the pregnancy. Had another colposcopy at my 6 week check up. It had turned into cancer. Had a conization and all the cancer was removed. That was 15 years ago. Have had regular paps since then.
The moral of this rather long winded reply is that dysplasia does not mean you cannot get pregnant.

HPV is very, very common, which is why IMHO it is great that they now have a vaccine for some strains.
I don't think not having periods would cause an abnormal pap, because a pap just checks for changes in cervical cells. I don't know that they are impacted by AF really. Not having regular AF does put us at risk for endometrial cancer, which is entirely different. I don't think women get regular screening of the endometrium like they do the cervix, but when a problem is suspected they do perform endometrial biopsies and go from there.

My Mood: Points: 450.71 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 450.71 | I had a coloscopy done in 1994 and at that time my doctor sprayed vinegar on my cervix. The dysplasia showed up immediately and so she did the LEEP right then. The worst part I remember was being given the local because it made my heart beat really fast and made me feel like I was having a heart attack! (I had never had any medical procedures prior). After that I just recall feeling like I was having a heavy period, but it was gone in a week or so. I followed up with check ups every 6 months for two years and have not had any problems since. I have had three children since then! I am surprised at how many women I know have HPV! I feel that the process sounds worse than it really is! Hang in there! |

The nurse explained that the diagnosis that is usually HPV is called low grade dysplasia... which if it remains at that level.. is pretty harmless. As other PP have said, since it's a virus very often your body will rid itself of HPV on it's own.
She did not mention anything about causing fertility problems, nor has any of the litterature i've read, so do not worry in those respects dear.
If you need to talk.. don't hesitate to get a hold of me.. as we are going thru the same thing at the same time.
