Hi there, I had my first HSG before getting pg with my son in 03'. I had another HSG in Feb of this year hoping it would "open" something up for me! LOL They really aren't bad at all! I was nervous so my RE prescribed a vallium for me to take before the hsg and I also took 4 motrin before hand too.
You'll be fine.
good luck,
kris

Hi there! I found the anticipation of the HSG to be much worse than the actual procedure. I had no pain at all and thought the doctor hadn't started it yet...then she said, "Okay, all done"! I was shocked.

I took 3 Advil 1 hour before and 1 Benadryl 30 minutes before.

Good luck!!

Well, we're all different. I am not going to lie. Mine was aweful. I was prescribed a Valium and told to take 3 Ibuprofin before. They had problems with my cervix and inserting the catheter, so it took longer and hurt a lot. The balloon also hurt. It's pretty quick, but I did cry. I hope it's easier for you... everyone is different; most women have no trouble. But you should be prepared just in case. Take a pain med and if you think you'll be tense, ask your doctor for a Valium.

I was told it would be excrutiating but wasn't prescribed anything. I took half an Ativan for my nerves and a Tylenol #3. I didn't need them though - seriously it was like a Pap smear. I had a slight cramp when I had to roll to my right but that was about it. I had cramping later on that day but nothing worse than AF.

Best part is that I conceived the following month

I was not prescribed anything to take beforehand. I did take some motrin and I thought it was painful but not unbearable. It felt like really bad AF cramps. I did not have any blockages, I have heard it can be more painful if there is a blockage. As impossible as it sounds the best thing to do is relax. Good luck!

I have anxiety disorder and wasnt prescribed anything beforehand. It was like a pinch and then some cramping. Not half as bad as I expected. In fact for me paps hurt worse.

I had an HSG done in April at The Woman's Hospital (I see you live in Houston). It really wasn't that bad. I took Tylenol 1 or 2 hours before my appointment. I did have pretty severe cramping when the dye was injected, but it lasted maybe 20 seconds (although it feels longer at the time!). The doctor that did it was very, very nice (Dr. Chauhan).

Good luck!

I, too, was VERY worried! I took my 800mg Advil 30 mins before procedure. When I got there ready to get it done, my cervix wasn't wanting to cooperate!! So she said something about going around to the side of the uterus? OK, so I ain't gonna lie...I have never felt pain like that before! Perhaps it's cause she had to go into the side? I'm not really sure! I thought I was doing fine. Later in the day, I had the MOST awful sharp constant pain and at that point I was in tears! Mine didn't feel like the "cramp" type feeling that some people experience...mine felt like my uterus was ripped clean out! lol BUT on a good note....everything looked good!

I'm having one done on Wednesday morning. Really nervous just because I'm such a pessimist when it comes to my health. My BFF is coming with me for support, she's been through everything before, said hers caused cramping but not as severe as with AF.

I just had mine done on June 26. I was one of the ones who felt some pretty major pain. My cervix was also very tight, so getting the catheter in was painful, then the cramping was like nothing I've ever felt before. I know at least for me, my AF cramps kind of "pulse" (for lack of a better word) but once I cramped with this, it did NOT let up. It was probably 30 minutes or so later before I finally could feel it relaxing. I also bled quite a bit that first day (much more than I would call spotting) and continued to spot for 4 days. My tubes were open though! So at least it's worth it in the end.

I took 2 advil before hand.

I had mine done 3 weeks ago and I'm not going to lie it was painful. I had some spotting for the rest of the day as well as cramps. It's different for everyone, good luck.

Mine was awefully painful too. My pain and cramping literally made me shake. I usually have a good tolerance for pain but noth with this. Everyone is different though. My dr just had my take ibuprofin. Which dind't help. You'll have a little discolored dischanged from the dye. That's normal. Just make sure you have someone to drive you home just in case. I didn't b/c DH couldn't get out of work and neither could friends/family.
Best of luck! It'll be over soon. And atleast they let you know right then and there if you look good to go!!
