Hey, I'm an x-ray tech who does these quite often and can give some insight. I haven't had one done (yet), but at least I can tell you what to expect! I posted this in another thread, so I'll just copy and paste.
A little FYI on how to prepare and what to expect since most doctors offices don't always give adequate info:
-Do not have intercourse from the onset of your period till after the test.
-The test needs to be scheduled between CD7 and CD10. Most Radiologists won't do it before or after.
-If you are spotting on the day of the test call the place where the test is being done because most Rads won't do it because of risk of infection.
-You may want to take an Ibuprofen or whatever you would normally take for cramps about an hour before.
-Bring a pad because you may have some spotting and you don't want the betadine they use to clean you off to stain your undies.
-Some Rads like the bladder full because it makes it easier to find the cervix.
-Most patients seem to have pain during the exam that feels like strong menstrual cramps. Some patients have no pain at all...it just depends.
They will first take a picture of your pelvis area to give the Dr. an idea of what everything looks like before they start. They will get a sterile tray ready that will have a speculum, the catheter, and other tools on it. You may see a needle on the tray, but that's just used to get the contrast (dye) out of the bottle. No needles will be coming near you! The catheter that they place in the uterus will be about the size of a spaghetti noodle, so it's really small! And on the end of the catheter there's a little balloon about the size of your finger tip that helps hold the catheter in place and makes a seal so the contrast doesn't come out. The first part of the exam is like a regular pelvic exam...they use a speculum just like at the gyno, so you probably know how that feels. Then they'll place the catheter and blow up the balloon and you'll probably have some mild cramping with that. Then they will inject the contrast and the cramping with that will probably be a bit worse. Hopefully you'll be one of the women who dont feel a thing! They'll take pictures while the contrast is being injected and probably have you rotate your hips to both sides so they can get different views and that'll be it! From the time the Dr starts to the time it's over is usually only 10min! Registering and the paperwork beforehand take four times as long as the test. I hope this helps calm your nerves! Don't be afraid to ask the techs anything, we're happy to answer any questions!!!
If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask! Holly
Well ladies I went and it wasn't that bad. Other than the doc saying that my cervix is small it was ok. I really hope that i'll be getting my bfp soon. I'm also on metformin which i've been on for about 5 months with that my testosterone has went from 100 something to 60 something. So fingers, toes, and eyes and everything else that can cross(lol) for that bfp.

I think I took 3 or 4 Advil a few hours before and my doctor froze my cervix, which seemed to help because I didn't think it was too painful. There was some cramping, but nothing worse than a bad period. I did have quite a bit of bleeding for two days after that. Good luck!
