Question HSG anyone?

Hi everyone - hope you are all doin' fine!

I am going to post this on the TTC forum, but wanted to ask here as well, as they lovely ladies from the rest of the world may have had very different experiences.

I saw my gyno today & she wants me to have a HSG before taking clomid again, just to check that my tubes are clear & make sure we aren't wasting un-necessary time.

Can anyone tell me what their experience was like (good or bad - I want to be prepared!) ?

Thank you,

Kirstie xx

Hi. I had an HSG a few weeks ago and I have to say it was bloody awful!!! I know other women have said they felt slight cramping but I found it very painful. Make sure you have some decent pain killers for afterwards and also take a san towel with you. I think half the trouble was that there was an hours delay before I went in so I was really worried and tense, it helps if you can relax before. And make sure you don't do anything for the rest of the day, be taken care of!!
Also it was very impersonal, the doctor was very matter of fact and didn't say goodbye, but the nurses were lovely and made me a cuppa after.
My tubes were all clear so it was definitely worth going through with it. I hope I haven't scared you!! But as I say other people have no problems so I think I must just be a wimp! Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi

I agree it is bloody awful! I had a nurse with me just to hold my hand but my doctor and radiographer were really great. It feels really uncomfortable - a bit like a smear but further up. You have to lie really still when everything is inside while they inject the die then the take the x rays. The pictures are really good though and I was also lucky to have no probs in that area!
I hope I haven't scared you but you are about to join a very exclusive club - we should get a survivors bagde or something. Anyway just remember to be taken home afterwards - don't drive, take a painkiller as soon as it's over because the cramping starts about an hour later and just lay on the sofa and relax.
Good luck

Tassy

Thanks ladies!

I have to say, I'm not really too worried about the procedure - it can't be any worse or mor painful than the biopsy I had a couple of years ago - but wanted to know what to expect & how much time to take off work. I don't think I'll be going back that day somehow!

Thanks again,

Kirstie

Hello Kirstie

I had an HSG yesterday - another horror story I'm afraid! I expected maybe a period pain type of cramping after the procedure, but the worst part for me was the dye being injected in. It was truly awful. I understood that everything was fine - tubes are clear although my cervix veers off to the left a bit and my left tube is in a funny position

I had no problems afterwards - no cramping - the dye just flowed out of its own accord, but I was very glad that DH was with me, as I felt very wobbly afterwards. I think it may just have been the shock of how painful it was as I didn't expect the procedure itself to hurt.

I have heard that it can hurt if the tubes are blocked, but the radiographer and nurse told me that everyone's reactions can be very different, and so our tales of woe will probably have no bearing on your experience.

I posted on the TTC board asking about HSGs, and most of the women there said that it was no big deal at all - no pain or minimal discomfort. There will be a some bleeding, so take a sanitary towel and painkillers beforehand seemed to be the general consensus, although I think I took mine too late or they weren't strong enough for me.

Sorry to waffle, I also hope that I haven't scared you, and that your procedure goes well!
