Default HSG - Scared sick.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I didn't see too much information on it.
I have to get an HSG soon and everything I read said either they didn't feel it or it was the worst pain ever so I'm a little afraid, I know giving birth will hurt but for some reason I'm much more afraid of something going in me like that then something coming out (something that's totally natural)
Just wondering if anyone has any advice? I make myself sick to my stomach thinking about it

I won't lie to you....when I had mine it hurt. When they were working on me, I just closed my eyes, and focused on breathing, and relaxing the muscles 'down there' I kept wanting to clench up...but I knew it would make it worse. Luckilly my dr was pretty quick, so it was over quickly. Then I just felt like I was having bad cramps the rest of the day.

Good Luck

I am one of the ones for whom it didn't hurt. I mean like, I barely felt it - no worse than the average gyno exam anyway. But, my BFF also had to have one and for her it hurt. I don't know why this particular procedure seems to have such different reactions, but it does. There's really no way you can know ahead of time how it will be for you. The best you can do is just take your ibuprofen before as directed, and try not to worry about it. Worst case, as the pp said, even if it is painful, it shouldn't take very long.

I totally agree with the previous poster. It seems like everyone really has a different exp with this test. Mine wasnt as bad as I thought, it was a pinch and some cramping. It was uncomfortable but I have very uncomfortable Gyn exams. I had cramping on and off for a while but again it wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

I go for mine on Monday so I am curious about this as well. I also have an odd question. Should I bring a pad/tampon with me? Will the dye be coming out of me throughout the day? Sorry if this is a silly question.

egb - a pad wouldn't hurt; I don't believe you are supposed to use a tampon immediately after the test. I think I had some dye still draining for a couple of hours afterward, but not the whole day.

Hi. I am waiting for my HSG appointment but I have read many articles about it. Mainly it says that you get cramping like period pains and this can last until all the dye is out. Defo take a tampon or pad though.

Try not to get too stressed out over it because being stressed can make you tense up your lower regions and make it painful. Like the lady in the other post said, just relax close your eyes and concentrate on breathing. It is all worth it when you think of why you are going through it!

Let me know how it goes

I had an HSG today and am one of the lucky ones...it was painfree! I did take a Klonopin to relax me and 800 mg Ibuprofen about 45 minutes before. I feel like that helped. See if your doctor will give you something to at least help you relax. If you are tense, it will hurt more. Good luck!

I actually just had my HSG done yesterday and was extremely nervous about it. For me, I did have quite a bit of cramping during the procedure but only mild cramping throughout the rest of the day. They had a pad waiting for me but I didn't really find that it was all that necessary. A panty liner would have sufficed. Don't worry too much about it because it'll be over before you know it. My RN suggested I start taking advil 600mg every 6 hours the day before and to continue on the day of the hsg. I think that may have helped me. Big deep breaths! Hang in there!

Thanks for the info. As eachday passes I am getting a bit more nervous. I will be taking some Ibprophen before I go for sure. Thanks again ladies!

I had my HSG yesterday and I was so happy it didn't hurt! I took 1 Flexiril about 2 hours before the procedure and all I felt was slight cramping when the balloon expanded.
Definitely was not as bad as I expected, maybe the muscle relaxer was the way to go.
Thanks ladies.

it sounds like you had a sonohistogram (sp?) not an hsg. HSG is where they inject dye into your fallopian tubes. The inflating the baloon one they are checking the surface of your uterus. That one is a little less painful than the hsg in my experiences. Either way congrats on it being a smooth experience for you!
