During and HSG they insert a balloon....AND they inject dye in your fallopian tubes. I have had it done twice. It didn't hurt either time....but I had no blockages either. They insert a speculum, then insert a balloon and inflate it to open your uterus so they can get to the fallopian tubes. They insert a catheter and put the dye through the tubes and tada...you are either blocked or your not! And it helps clear them out if there was anything in there too....I wasn't even scared at my last one. The first time scared the hell out of me though....lol Just make sure you take your ibuprofen about 30 min to an hour before and you'll be good to go!
I had mine and had very little discomfort. I did take 600mg of Advil about an hour before, but that was it, I didn't need anything after. I wore a pantyliner and that was all I needed. Like someone else said, I just tried to stay as relaxed, loose and open as possible and I had no problems. I hope yours goes well!

Cervix checks during pregnancy were 1000x worse than the HSG. I describe the HSG as a combination of a really bad cramp and a pap smear. Your doctor might be willing to prescribe a pain med, but at least take something OTC to help. It's likely not going to be nearly as bad as you think.

It was definitely an HSG. The way the doctor explained it to me is that the balloon was there to hold the catheter in place while they had me lean from side to side to ensure the dye got were it was supposed to and they could take the best x-rays. I have also read a lot of stories from women were a balloon was involved.
Thanks Sassy82

Thanks for the clarification...I didn't know about the balloon thing either....good to know what in the world they were doing down there. I have an extremely low pain tolerance so they lightly sedated me. I still screamed! Again, though I'm a baby!

so, i have to have one of these and thought i knew what the procedure was from seeing it on here... but the nurse described it to me saying they were going to insert a wire INTO my tubes? i said i thought it was just dye and she said a wire. also - i thought it just lasted a minute or two and she said it would be 10-15 minutes. what's up? am i confusing this procedure?

When I had my HSG it did make me cramp. I think I was just more uncomfortable more than anything. because of the way they have you laying on the table. I took Ibuprofen 30 min before it really helped once everything was done. I hope everything goes well good luck
Nope, with an hsg, they insert a baloon to fill the uterus a bit. I just had mine. It was painful when the balloon was inflated, but ok after that..just uncomfortable.
My RE was also quick and calming...that helps!
Hey! I has an HSG done a few months back. It was not bad at all. I felt just like you are right now because I too read and heard stories of the pain from having it done. It felt like menst. cramps. After it was all done and over I had no pain at all.
