Greyt00, if we don't get our BFPs we'll probably be getting ours done around the same time, let's keep in touch, lend each other a little emotional support!

I plan on taking some 800 mg motrin before I go in. Hopefully that will be enough. At the Kaiser class the nurse told us they should be able to give us the results right then and there.

Sounds like a plan Sabrina! I'll post back here when the appt. is made. Unless a miracle happens....

I had an HSG done this earlier this month. It took about 20 minutes. It honestly didn't hurt at all until about the last 4-5 minutes and even then it just felt like the beginning of AF. Then it just faded back to normal. They want you to have it done between CD7-10 so that it is after AF and before you ovulate so there is no chance that you could be pregnant. They don't want the iodine to harm your baby.

Minor blockages, if any, may be cleared from the iodine in the HSG. If there is anything else that they find, there are other procedures that can be done. There is no reason NOT to have it done. If there is a problem you might as well take care of it before you spend all the time, money, and heartache. If there isn't anything then you have the peace of mind that will hopefully help in your TTC journey!

Had an HSG done a couple of months ago. I have a left tube blocked. I am getting surgery tomorrow to get it fixed. When you get an HSG they tell you right away what is going on so you don't have to wait for any results. It only hurt during the test and after the cramping kind of went away.

How soon do you get results? During the sonohysterogram they told me on the spot what they saw. Is this more complicated?
They tell you on the spot with this too. My doctor showed me everything, on the screen, that was going on. He talked to me the whole time (mostly about dogs!), which helped too!

And as far as the pain and cramping go, it's painful during the HSG, which is quick. I was crampy the rest of the day, but could have gone back to work. Felt like AF cramps. So the cramps after HSG are not bad.

I agree with the PPs - minor blockages MAY be cleared out, so that is a plus! Then there is always surgery if it is severe. I'm not entirely sure though as I fortunately never had to explore those options.

I had my HSG in April and it wasn't bad at ALL. It felt a bit uncomfortable when the catheter went in (just that - no pain whatsoever), and the slightest, AF-like cramp when I had to roll on my right side (so the dye could flush through the tube). The whole thing took about 4-5 minutes and it was a piece of cake. I was terrifed and almost and cancelled, but I'm so glad I didn't. I conceived on the next cycle

I agree with previous posters as well.

Since you have no coverage for the ultrasounds its a waste of money to not know if your tubes are blocked. Imagine paying all the money and later finding out about any blockage.

My hsg was painless. I took 2 prescription strength Aleve, one 2 hours before going in and another 1 hour before (trying to cover my bases). I honestly didnt feel anything and had no cramping afterwards. And, if no issues its over in 5 minutes!

I did my on CD 10 IIRC and then ovulated a couple days later. you can definitely TTC on the same cycle. My RE actually had me on clomid that cycle as well.

Yes, you should do it. It may be very painful or it may be no big deal. There's no way to know before hand, really. Mine felt like a bad AF cramp, but I was fine after it was over. If your tubes are blocked, you need to know.

I haven't read through all your replies, so I apologize if I'm repeating anything. I just thought I'd share my experience. In 2005 with our first RE I had the HSG test done and it did hurt but I didn't take the Advil until after the procedure, plus that dr was a complete moron!! My left tube was completely blocked and my right tube was partially blocked. They let you see the screen while it's being done, it kinda helps distract you too. In 2006 I had a laparoscopy done to see if he could clear out my tubes. He successfully cleared my right tube but for some reason left my left tube blocked (something about the tube itself being damaged??). Fast forward to 2007 we switched clinics and RE's and I had the HSG re-done by my current RE. I took Advil about 1/2 hour before the procedure and it was a peice of cake!! I had no idea he was doing it until he said he was done already! We were moving on to IVF anyhow (after 1 or 2 more IUI's) due to Male Factor reasons so we just left my left tube the way it was but the test confirmed that my right tube was still open. Fast forward again to present. A few weeks ago I had another laparoscopy done to have ovarian drilling done. While they were in there they said they'd see what they can do with my left tube... this dr was able to clear it out and I now have both tubes open!

So it can be done! My dh's sperm counts have increased and now we're moving back to IUI's with my next cycle. Sorry it was such a long reply but I wanted you to hear both my experiences and that even if your tubes are blocked it can have a happy ending. So, to answer your question, I would totally do the HSG dye test first, no point wasting time and money, just-in-case. And my current RE had us do a medicated cycle the cycle we did our HSG test as for some women it can increase pregnancy success, not sure why, and it's why they do the test before you would ovulate. Best of luck to you!!

Thaks Jodi, and thanks to everyone who replied, even if I didn't specifically mention you. It's scary to think about a blockage, but I guess it's not the end of the world. I hiope if something IS wrong that they can try to fix it quickly. It's crazy but now I want my period to HURRY UP, since I've already given up for this cycle.

I also had a HSG but mine was painful. No regrets I found out that my tubes were all clear and hopefully it cleaned them out. If you have a low pain tolerance ask your doc to prescribe you some pain meds.

I scheduled my HSG today. It's afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 28. The doc won't prescribe anything for me. They told me to take pain meds in advance. I don't think they will let DH in the room at all, either, but I still want him to drive me.

Aleve worked great for me. I think 1 prescription stregth Aleve is the same as 2 regular aleve. If you take 3 or 4 an hour before you should be fine.

Default Had an HSG of Friday(Nov 7th)

I hate the dr's. Every part of it I hate. When he said HSG I got very nervious and didnt go back for a year.

I returned to the Dr in October. Started Provera, AF came. Started Clomid and Scheduled My HSG. I was smart this time, I scheduled it for the next day so I couldnt have alot of time to freak out. Everyone in the office was very nice. before the procedure I googled it 100 different ways and scared myself half to death about the cramps and pain.

I went to the dr the day of the procedure, Started shaking on the table.

Truthfully it wasnt that bad at all, The worst part was having the speculum in for so long(about 5-10 mins) the rest relt like a pap. I didnt have any cramping throught the procedure. When they injected the Dye it made me feel like I needed to pee but I just couldnt, like something was blocking it. and before i knew it it was over and I didnt have a blockage! Well worth it in the long run because now I dont need to worry about it again! It isnt as bad as you think it will be. every person is differnt so what is bad for one person might not be bad for you. Hope all went well! Baby Dust To All!!
