I was diagnosed with PCOS about 14 years ago when I was 16. Since the diagnosis I've bene left to my own devices, taking Dianette and getting hairier, fatter and moodier by the year. I'm at the stage where I'm so hairy I was finally prescribed Vaniqa, which seems to be having no effect on my hair growth, and the hospital, 18 months ago, found an ovarian cyst about the size of a cricket ball and left it there after making the comment of "well you do have PCOS, what do you expect". Now 18 months or so later, there's a mass that starts at my pelvis and extends up into my abdomen (about 2 ribs high). It's so large they're not sure where it starts or what it's attached to.
The hospital have taken bloods, performed a chest xray and I have my CT scan tomorrow. I've been told the cyst needs to be removed, but due to the size of it, they're not sure which department will take responsibility for the surgery.
In short my own GP said it was an oddity and that she hadn't seen anything that size before in any of her patients. I'm just worried about how it will be removed, what it actually is and what intermal damage it's done. I'm only 30 and not had children yet, so I want that to be an option in the future. The consultant also said that a lot of the problems I'm having like IBS, dyspepsia, chest pains etc are probably because the mass is pushing on my organs and squashing them.
I suppose I just wanted to sound off and have a discussion about it with people in a similar boat to me.
I found out a couple of weeks ago, that I have two cysts on my ovaries. My OB/gyn has a "wait and see" attitude. Told me that in 3 months I should get scanned again. I will make sure I am dont let this go or make sure the doctors take it seriously. Thank you for posting. I hope you get the help you need.

That was pretty much the attitude taken by my OB/GYN consultant and now 18 months later, I've put on nearly 2 stone in weight, my symptoms are all a lot worse than they've ever been (particularly the hair growth as Veet won't remove it, wax only removes it when it's at the length when I have a full beard, and a large number of the hairs are so tough the are ingrowing) my cyst/"huge mass" extends from my ovary up into my rib cage.
In my books I find the attitude my consultant took to be wholely inappropriate. In summary, I had my ultrasound with a nurse and saw the consultant straight after. He never even mentioned the cyst. It took for me to ask him about it as the nurse commented that she found it alarming, when she was performing the scan. The notes he sent to my GP just commented that he had found gall stones. There's no mention of the cyst.
I'm pretty upset that I took the advice of the consultant and trusted his "you have PCOS, what do you expect" attitude as being the correct attitude and accepted that I was concerned unduly. I'm now looking at losing 1 or both of my ovaries and possibly losing the chance of having kids and being forced into an early menopause. If something was done about the mass/cyst 18 months ago I don't think I'd be in this state.
Are you seeing someone different now? You might have a Law suit.
I am going to be hounding my ob-gyn. I had gastric bypass 6 weeks ago and I think she wants me to heal from this surgery, but I still felt the messed up attitude.

Sorry for the delay. I have moved specialists, and hospitals now. I had my test results this week and it is just a cyst! PHEW.
I saw the CT images and the cyst is growing from my left ovary and extends into my rib cage. As it's grown the cyst has pushed all of my organs in to the left side of the chest cavity. It seems that everytime I've told my doctor I hae chest pains, IBS symptoms, indigestion, nausea and weight gain, it's not all because I'm fat and lying about my eating habits. It's because of this cyst. My doctors standard response for 4 years has been, "you're fat. loose weight and you won't have chest pains/bad back/IBS/Nausea/indigestion/depression etc"
I'm quite disappointed that these doctors are in a caring profession and quite clearly don't care about their patients. The consultant wants me in before the end of December to get this removed, but they're leaving things a little too late for my liking.
