My shrink was the first doctor to NOT say i was crazy when I told him i thought i had PCOS.. he asked me some questions, and then looked at the back of my neck, and he said "yes, ma'am i believe you do have stein-leventhal. Your symptoms combined with the buffalo hump? I'd be willing to bet money on it."
So I think it's REALLLLLY common in PCOS patients.

In some cases this isn't enough and a ct or mri scan need to be done for many mild cushings patients who sometimes are wrongly diagnosed with pcos. |

My doctor told me that the "buffalo hump" is a sign of Cushings disease (like another girl already mentioned). Cushings and PCOS have very similar side effects but many people with Cushings have the hump. He did test me for Cushings even though he thought I didn't have it because I didn't have a hump. He did comfirm that it was PCOS instead. I would get checked out for Cushings if you haven't already just to rule it out. Good luck!

I asked my chiropractor, my gyn, and my re they all said it was fat and would go away with weight loss. What scares me is my dad had one and his turned out to be a tumor. I think mine is from the weight that I gained so fast. Hopefully it will diminish with weight loss.

I picked up a book on PCOS a few days ago - just to have it as a support - but there was a chapter that was devoted to Cushing's and it listed that many people with Cushing's are diagnosed with PCOS (like MANY posters have already mentioned), and the hump is the first symptom mentioned. It also mentioned how difficult it is to diagnose, and how doctors don't necessarily test for it at all if they find symptoms of something that's a little more straight-forward (in their opinion), because it is not all that common. I was not tested for it.
I am quite obese, have huge boobs, and crap posture, but I have never had the hump.

My dad used to say it was a lump of fat, but the orthopedic assured me that it was not. So I wonder if any of you may have a congenital defect in your neck also.

My dd has it too and says it hurts her sometimes. I always just thought it was just growing pains. I am going to have to research this.
