I've got this hump too, I have lost about 80 pounds now and I am not really convinced it has changed at all. I just thought it was from bad posture though.

Yeah, I have a buffalo hump, too. My shrink was the first doctor to NOT say i was crazy when I told him i thought i had PCOS.. he asked me some questions, and then looked at the back of my neck, and he said "yes, ma'am i believe you do have stein-leventhal. Your symptoms combined with the buffalo hump? I'd be willing to bet money on it."
So I think it's REALLLLLY common in PCOS patients.

you have a shrink? is it common in the US to have a shrink? it's one of the stereotypes that we have of Americans, I've often wondered it it's true - I remember reading that even shrinks go to shrinks sometimes!

yeah i have a shrink.. i have severe anxiety and depression due to a sexual assault. But it's pretty common to have a shrink.. It's never a bad thing to have someone you can talk to and discuss positive ways to relieve stress.

It's always good to have someone to talk to. I tried counselling a few times but it doesn't work for me, but I am all for it on other people if it helps.

I sort of have it too and so does my mom. My mom is not as overweight as I am. I think it could be genetic also.

Default Hump

I have the hump and it gets worse once I am off the Dex...word of advice, see if you have any symptoms of Cushings...Cushings is very, very hard to diagnose and needs a lot of testing to be ruled out (3 saliva tests, 24 hr urine collection and cortisol blood test). In some cases this isn't enough and a ct or mri scan need to be done for many mild cushings patients who sometimes are wrongly diagnosed with pcos.

I always heard that the hump is a trait of eastern European women, I've had mine my whole life even when I was thin...I wouldn't worry about it

My doctor told me that the "buffalo hump" is a sign of Cushings disease (like another girl already mentioned). Cushings and PCOS have very similar side effects but many people with Cushings have the hump. He did test me for Cushings even though he thought I didn't have it because I didn't have a hump. He did comfirm that it was PCOS instead. I would get checked out for Cushings if you haven't already just to rule it out. Good luck!

I have the hump on the back of my neck. I asked my chiropractor, my gyn, and my re they all said it was fat and would go away with weight loss. What scares me is my dad had one and his turned out to be a tumor. I think mine is from the weight that I gained so fast. Hopefully it will diminish with weight loss.

Yes.

I picked up a book on PCOS a few days ago - just to have it as a support - but there was a chapter that was devoted to Cushing's and it listed that many people with Cushing's are diagnosed with PCOS (like MANY posters have already mentioned), and the hump is the first symptom mentioned. It also mentioned how difficult it is to diagnose, and how doctors don't necessarily test for it at all if they find symptoms of something that's a little more straight-forward (in their opinion), because it is not all that common. I was not tested for it.

I am quite obese, have huge boobs, and crap posture, but I have never had the hump.

My orthopedic doctor said my hump is a congenital defect. It is painful at times. My dad used to say it was a lump of fat, but the orthopedic assured me that it was not. So I wonder if any of you may have a congenital defect in your neck also.

I have it, but never thought it was related to PCOS. That is interesting.

My dd has it too and says it hurts her sometimes. I always just thought it was just growing pains. I am going to have to research this.
