Default Hump on Neck...

Does anyone else have the hump on thier neck? It almost looks like I have scoliosis. Will this go away? I'm really self concious about it. The doctor really didn't give me any feedback about this.

I have a horrible " Buffalo hump" too. My doctor claimed it will go away with weight loss and metformin, Ive lost about 15 pounds since and it's looks a alot better & does not stick out as bad as it use to . It is not completely gone but i think once i hit my goal weight that it would disappear for sure.

I've heard that a buffalo hump is sometimes a sign of Cushings. Have you been checked for this before? If not you may want to look into it just to be safe.

my doc, and physiotherapist says that its a common problem with overweight people, all to do with posture. I have it and its getting worse as I get older...I've been tested for Cushings but it was negative - my endo queried Cushings the first time he met me!

If you need to read up on that, have a look here and maybe you should ask to be tested too.

I agree. It does appear to be weight-related. I have a family member who also had the 'hump' but after she lost all the weight, she grew back into her neck.

I have had the "bump" almost all of my life. My mother has it as well. It was hard when I was younger, my brother would always tease me. My doctor has never mentioned any concern about it. I don't know if it is PCOS related or not. I am the only women in all of my family with PCOS. Hmmmmm...

That you know of Stephie I am the only one diagnosed but I'm sure nearly every woman on my mum's side has it. They all have varying symptoms all though none as severe as mine.

I don't have the hump though and I am significantly overweight but I guess it affects us all in different ways.

I heard it was a sign of cushings also. It wouldn't hurt to get that checked. Better safe than sorry. From what I have read and heard, it is common for Cushings to go untreated and undiagnosed.

Good Luck

Exclamation Hump back of U.S.A

I am 27 and notice my hump had gotten bigger, very noticable to my husband. It started 4 years ago. The stretch marks I've have since 19(bore a child). Just had another child 7 months ago. While lying flat on the floor doing excersice i feel this stupid lump, and hurts. I feel some straining back there also. I never went to y doctor because i'm embarrased.

Oh yeah I am also Obese BMI=33 236pounds.
Gained all this weight after Marriage25 years of age I was 170 washboard abs testeing to go into the MILITARY. Now, Aniety-Depression. Had child gained weight, low energy. bla bla bla.

Starting to do some stretches on the floor, get the ol' me back.

I am a 32 year old female that also has the same “hump” as you all have described. It became noticeable about four years ago after I began to gain weight and has gotten more pronounced over the years. However, I have always had a small “bump” or “knot” feeling at the base of my neck between my shoulders since I was a child. It was first detected at age 11 during a routine examination for scoliosis at my elementary school. I was referred to a chiropractor who diagnosed it as scoliosis and said with better posture it would get better over time. As I got older and the small knot became painful, I saw a few other chiropractors who told me the same.

It wasn't until I was 29 and noticed the protruding hump forming on my neck that I freaked out and visited a spine specialist who advised me that my condition was not scoliosis at all. He explained that the hump was an accumulation of fat and referred me to an Endocrinologist to be tested for Cushing’s. The Endocrinologist has since determined that I do not have Cushing’s. I do however have other endocrine issues such as an enlarged thyroid nodule and insulin resistance as a result of pre-diabetes. I started taking Metformin 1000 mg /day about a month ago and was also prescribed Adipex for weight loss. I also just learned that the enlarged nodule will have to be removed surgically………yikes!!!!

Seems like all has been diagnosed except …you guess it. The hump!! All of the Endocrine docs have seen it and have just explained it as the way my body is shaped and have made no suggestions about the extreme pain it causes me either. I am just exhausted with trying to figure this out. I am now more determined than ever to loss weight because when I was under 150 lbs (I am 4’11’’), the hump was not noticeable at all. I have already lost 10 pounds this past month with the Adipex and regular exercise. I have 35 pounds to go. I am preying that this thing disappears once I hit my goal weight because ladies, I have had it with the long hair and collared shirts!!!

My mom and I both have Scoliosis and humps. My mom has lost a significant amount of weight(100+lbs) and still has her hump, same size, so it's not always weight-related.

I have always had a hump even when I was smaller so maybe it's not always connected to weight?

I think we all have that hump. I've had it since birth. I wasn't always big and my cushings was (-). I'd say it makes us one of a kind
