Does anyone else have a noticable hump on the back of their neck/upper back? its totally ebmarassing...my boyfriend of 4 years hadnt noticed it then one day i had my swim suit on and he wasnt trying to be mean but he said "that swim suit makes you look like you have a hump" and i just lost it, he felt terrible afterwards when i explained it all to him....i was just wondering if i was the only one...and if im not...what do you do about it? is there any way (even surgical) to get rid of it?

I do not have the hump back, but I do know that it is a classic characteristic of Cushing's Syndrome--a syndrome which, incidentally, is comprised of MANY of the same symptoms as PCOS. You may want to look into Cushing's online...
I'm so sorry that this is causing you discomfort or embarrassment.
I just thought I'd pass along this info!

Check out about Cushings and also about low-carbing. I think I read about some losing weight by low-carbing and it lessened or disappeared. It sucks doesn't it??

I have that a little bit, its not bad but is definately there and I am afraid it will get worse.I have asked the doctor about it in the past and never really got a good answer...Just wanted to say I know how you feel. I hope you find out about what it is soon, and I would like to know for myself too!
good luck!

I have it too. I hate it. I haven't worn a bathing suit in over 6 years and I only wear tops that cover it. Plus, I am growing my hair long to cover it completely.
I feel your pain.

I have that too. Its amazing how many things it has held me back from doing :
Low cut shirts,
Cutting my hair short, although I know it looks better that way,
Going veil-less on my wedding day...I really dont like veils,
The list goes on and on...
Nice to know I'm not alone though, thanks ladies

I have it too - swimming and massages help. I had to go to the physio to sort out a sports injury and he massaged the top of my back and it made it feel much better. It still hurts when I get tired or on Fridays when I've been at work all week but I just do some upper body stretches and it helps.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem. Do you think it's related to the PCOS?
I don't have a hump back. But I've always heard that humped backs and round shoulders are signs of poor posture. Stand up straight and keep your shoulders back. Have confidence in your body and be proud of who you are. Please don't take this too personal. It's just my opinion.

This is not caused from bad posture or Cushings. Many women with PCOS have this hump. It is also known as a Dowager Hump. With most of the women that i have known it is not connected with the spine at all and is very different than the typical hunch back look that you sometimes see in older people. It is more of a fleshy lump that sometimes will go down with weight loss. Usually they are painless unless that is where you collect your tension during stress.
I am not sure about how to get rid of it except weight loss but i'm sure it could be surgically removed if it causes someone great distress.
Take Care and know that your not alone. I posted about this very subject when i first came to Soulcysters.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the replies! im glad to know im not the only one here with this problem....also i have been tested for cushings and that was negative...i know my poor posture makes it look worse but even in stright standing postion its horribly ugly! the obvious answer to most my problems is weight loss. and this is just another one of those problems ...keeps me motivated i guess
thanks again ladies

Im pretty sure its PCOS related because i didnt have it until i was well into my teen years and if it were just a posture problem i think it would have shown up sooner

I have this. I have had everything done to diagnose what it could be from ultrasounds to x-rays and no one has been able to say why I have it. The first time I can remember it being seen by an MD was when I was 11.
I agree, that it swells when I am stressed and is relieved by massage or sometimes ice.
I am very interested in finding the research that indicates that this is PCOS related. We are trying to gather as much information as possible so that when the attorneys contact me for my families lawsuit, I can have as much information as possible.

I have my little hump back! Ugly little sucker! It has gotten better in the last few years however, but not completely gone away. I lay flat on the floor for about 30 everyday to straighten the spine. You might also try on of those bras that pulls your shoulders together. That has helped a great deal as well. : )
